The title of this thread is probably not great but I’m tired and being lazy.

I was shocked yesterday when the guy that sat next to me, full IU gear on, excited and cheering for the Hoosiers, there with his teenage son (using a friend’s tickets) leaned over to ask me who our QB was. And then asked what happened to the QB from Center Grove? I immediately thought of Tyler Cherry, but he was talking about Tayven.

all of that to say, we still have a new fan base. Not die hards like people that post on message boards 12-months a year. And we need those people so that they can become bigger fans.

just a specific interaction I thought I would share to maybe help with some perspective.

Good post. The man was there! And with his son. Cool.

I didn't hear it on TV, only from posts, but was there actually booing? Who the hell would be that much of an idiot? And multiple idiots?

Hopefully that was overblown.

True.  I thought the bandwagon would be bigger than it is now.  But I guess when IUFB has not been good for most people's lifetimes, it takes time to get them to pay attention and get committed.  We have very little football culture at IU.  It's stinks, but it is what it is.

When the Colts got good with Peyton, it took several years to get real ticket demand.  For example, in 1999 we had a bye and the Titans fans tookover the RCA Dome for our home playoff game.

Also, as you say, most people are not message board posters, including on the bball side.  Go to Assembly Hall this and a lot of fans won't know our new guys either.

I'm not making excuses and saying things should be this way or that way, these are just observations.

Bro. Same experience with us. Got some new seat neighbors at the HHOC that clearly have more dollars than sense.

didn’t know the QB. Giggling like crazy about the bison skydiving in. Knew nothing about football in general. But had all the IU drip.

hopefully they just got tickets from the actual holder. Or that Jr is able to smarten them up on ball knowledge week to week.

@openwheel I was there and did not hear any booing. I was surprised when I read that. I don’t doubt it though. There are a bunch of band wagon people there who do not have any idea what they are watching. It will happen but that was the largest crowd I can remember for an opener against a second level team, or any team not named OSU. As mentioned it will take time to develop as will the recruiting base. If Cig can keep winning on the way, IU will have something very good.

I absolutely heard the booing on tv.  I don't remember exactly when, but I think it was after one of our (numerous) failed goal line attempts.

At the game the booing was very mild.  I didn’t think anything of it until people posted about it.

Sounds like he needs to read our stuff. But yeah, that’s annoying. Like watching a movie where someone asks who’s that every 5 seconds

@tmft IU needs all the fans they can get. Remember 2 years ago we were loving each other all 5k people in the stadium.

Definitely a lot of low football IQ around us as well.  But at least mine stayed the whole game.  I’m a little worried my daughter is going to get into a fight with the older ladies behind us at some point.

They were complaining about every call, making dumb statements and generally just negative about almost everything on both sides of the ball.

During the punt they were complaining Brady didn’t run up and catch it, that changed to why are you letting it bounce, to get away from the ball to why are you picking it up.  After he returned it for the TD my daughter turned around and said I guess he knows what he’s doing after all.

It’s going to be interesting because my daughter knows more about football and football strategy than a lot of guys I know and she doesn’t have much patience for people who clearly don’t, especially when they are fans of our team.  When she was a student at IU she got into it with one of the Wisconsin players during a game.

@openwheel 100% sounded like booing from the students. We have the windows open in the radio booth, so definitely heard some boos

He wasn’t annoying and I wasn’t complaining. Just sharing an observation.

@gros-louis That's a great interaction and very accurate. I regularly interact with people at church or walking around in my neighborhood that are sports fans. They are fans of different teams...whether it's South Carolina or Clemson or IU or whoever...95% of the time when I get into a conversation with them about a game or a particular team, I know more about their own team than they do. They enjoy watching the games and they enjoy rooting for the team they pull for but they don't follow the roster changes, they don't follow recruiting, they don't know who's coaching the other team or much of anything beyond what they are seeing on the field. Turning those "casuals" (not that it's a dirty word but we have to label it somehow) into "diehards" are part of changing the culture of a fan base. Turning winning from a one-year thing into a consistent habit is the best way for IU to do that.

@gros-louis What about second hand embarrassment?   Surely you at least felt that…
