This was bound to happen.
The smaller athletic depts will need to stick together. OSU FB may win a lot, but they still need a conference and teams to play.
Yeah...this will be something I monitor and get educated on. I don't like where it's headed. Texas tried the same thing with the old BigXII
OSU doesn’t have the threat to leave the B1G, unless they want to form a super league and ruin CFB.
However, OSU is going to ask for more money in the next TV deal and the rest of he conference needs to tell them to F off.
This would've worked had they tried to go in that direction before. The issue is there isn't really anywhere to run but independent, or if they tried to join a conference, like the Big 12, where they wouldn't earn nearly as much. If they went to the SEC, they wouldn't offer them advantageous payments compared to the rest of the conference.
To that, every time a conference has given in to a school (or schools) its resulted in the conference falling in favor of other conferences, and those higher paid schools all ended up leaving anyways. There truly is no benefit to the other teams. The B1G could try to rid itself of the bottom feeders that lower the average pay but I don't think that would offer long-term benefits. Its a moot and wasted attempt. I for one would be ok with them leaving the B1G. Oregon, Penn State, Indiana and USC would gladly lead the 2nd best conference.
These morons are determined to kill the golden goose.
I'd love to see O$U in a conference with Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, etc.
They can all beat themselves and whine because their records are mediocre.
Then the Big Ten can go back to being 10 teams and the Pac10 can have 10 teams and the Big 12 12 teams, SEC can have 10 teams or however many.
Then we can have the bowl system again and let the super league self-flagelate themselves.

The current system already helps OSU:
- Media rights are equal but TV exposure is not. OSU gets much more TV exposure, be it Big Noon, GameDays, and of course the primo network TV slots for their games.
- The increased exposure helps them (i) recruit better which helps them win even more, (ii) increase the size of their fanbase which turns into revenue (donations and buying tickets), and (iii) sell sponsorships at a premium. It's a bit of a snowball/flywheel -- whatever analogy you want to use.
I don't have a problem with the above points, this is what allows the B1G media rights to be so big -- the best teams get on TV more and drive ratings. And credit to OSU for building a big football and winning program.
But, even those smug F's need an ecosystem for their teams to play in. Their athletic dept revenue is 1.5-2x most of the conference. If they start taking more of the media rights, then it's going to get even more lopsided and less competitive. At the end of the day, there has to be some competition among schools or else why would anyone follow or watch?
I don't think OSU has much leverage, but they'll try when that B1G media deal renews in five years. And as other have said, they need to make sure they don't kill the golden goose -- they have it pretty good right now.
To Ohio State and fans: "I got yer media rights right here pal!"
This is why IU being so stupid and shortchanging football until very recently has caused permanent damage. It has no leverage when negotiating media rights and can easily get left behind in the arms race. It leeched off of programs that made the money for the conference.

LOL. Fcking Fred Glass.
@iugradman Hopefully we turned it around right in time. One of the largest alumni bases in the country and if we can keep it going that will translate into a lot of eyeballs. That is all that matters.

even if Indiana had taken football seriously 40 years ago, they were never going to sustain like Michigan, Ohio State, or Penn State. Our ceiling is most likely Wisconsin in Big Ten terms.

Kind of an inside joke. For years and years gradman blamed everything that went wrong with anything IU athletics on Fred Glass. Every dropped pass, every missed three, every wide spike, every missed putt. He's much better, but I continue to remind him when I get a chance.

I’ve noticed he’s a bit of an extremist. But I don’t have much history with him

As I said, he's much better now. But during the Miller and Allen years he was insufferable.
