Notre Dame is out

Forget about the players for a second. Think about all the fans, the band, the cheerleaders, etc., who won't get to experience a bowl game against Texas or BYU or whomever. That might have been a big deal to them. Did those people get to weigh in on this decision?

It's an embarrassing, dickless move by an already-despised school. You've benefited SO many times over the years being an Independent, ND, but it burned you this time. If you wanted to stick it to the committee, you could have boat raced your bowl opponent and made them look foolish.

Way to handle adversity, ass holes. Someday you'll realize your last title was 37 years ago. You ain't anywhere near what you think you are as a program. I call this "Nebraska Syndrome."

Notre Dame deserved in and Alabama deserves out.

But the stupid thing was somehow Miami roaring up the standings and passing Notre Dame even though Notre Dame played as strong or stronger.

Was the committee just in the room smoking stogies and drinking scotch when they made their previous rankings with Miami far behind Notre Dame?

The BCS took away decision making from fools like these. They once again prove why. They are just corrupt and more importantly incompetent. They apparently view their job to be killing the golden goose.

Close enough to the bubble that Notre Dame has little case to cry about it, but the smoke filled room boys just went for the money for their conferences and for ESPN.

I would've thought ESPN wanted Notre Dame in, but I'll bet that ESPN/ABC thought they could have their cake and eat it too by getting that BYU - Notre Dame matchup in the pop tarts bowl on ABC. LOL, maybe why ND said to #### off.

@gthomas I just read that ND only has 3 away games next year.  They are soft as baby sh*T.  Shouldn't be allowed.

Meh, I'm not a Domer by any stretch. They and their fanbase are up there with OSU/Michigan levels of obnoxious, with a smattering of Chicago arrogance tossed in for good measure. That said ND lost to Miami and aTm by 4 pts total their first two games of the season and didn't lose again for nearly 3 months...but somehow they were effectively jumped by 2 teams in successive weeks who did nothing to earn the bump? I get that Miami didn't make their CCG but I can see looking at H2H as a late differentiator so they have a legit argument with getting in.

Bama OTOH, hasn't had a good win since Tennessee in the middle of October. The last 4 games were lost to Oklahoma, beat a directional Illinois cupcake, barely squeak by a weak Auburn team before getting their shit pushed in by Georgia for a 3rd loss. 3 losses and 2-2 in their last 4 shouldn't have gotten them in.

The question is: would you have put Bama in over ND before the confereence championship game?  Bama beat Georgia on the road and Vandy.  ND didn't have a big win.

Like others have said, join a conference.

There’s really no question that ND is one of the 12 best teams in college football, but entry into the playoff isn’t really geared toward amassing the top 12. Their reality is governed by their refusal to join a conference. Until they do, they’re going to be vulnerable to exclusion from the tournament unless the rules are altered (expansion or qualifiers).

The playoff system is rewarding winning.  That is an objective way to determine a top 12, more than just saying "wow, ND is playing great right now".

@paterade i haven't checked their schedule, but let me take a few guesses...

  • At least one MAC team
  • Every Service Academy that exists (including the Coast Guard)
  • The East Compton rugby team
  • A massively overrated USC team that ND will claim is a "great" victory if they win.
  • Stanford

F*** you, ND. I hope you find a touch of class at the end of the rainbow.

Other than us, what other team has won their last 10 besides ND? Their two losses were by single digits to two playoff teams. Do you really believe JMU and Tulane are better than ND? I’m not a Domer by any stretch of the imagination, but neither of those two teams would stay close to ND.

ND plays six at home, six away (a couple on neutral fields) in 2026. Looks like we could have 8 home games, which would be great.

No, I wouldn't have. Alabama spent 2 consecutive weeks behind Notre Dame in the CFP rankings after losing at home to Oklahoma. Was a 49-0 win over Eastern Illinois and a 27-20 win over a 5-6 Auburn team really enough to leapfrog Notre Dame after a 70-7 win over Syracuse and a 49-20 win over Stanford? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

Either way, I won't shed any tears for the Domers.

Exactly…take Tulane and JMU out and put the teams that are rightly #11 and #12 in the bracket. Now JMU is going to fly across the country and get smoked while no one watches the 7:30 playoff game. These people could have Sydney Sweeney naked and not know what to do

@jackskip23 The Irish are playing like a Top 5 team right now, so their anger is certainly justified. But opting out of a bowl game to send a message to the CFP committee is absolutely classless. I think the powers-that-be at ND expect the college football world to get behind them on this one, but the move simply confirms they have an "our shit don't stink" mentality.

ND just set a precedent, so I expect more P4 powerhouses will do the same in the future, even if they aren't in CFP consideration.

I would venture that many of their players who are draft eligible would’ve opted out of a non-CFP bowl, while others who are ready would’ve announced their intention to transfer. The CFP will need to expand if bowl games for the non-participants are to be saved. Otherwise, teams won’t want to play and fans won’t want to shell out money to travel somewhere to see a meaningless game featuring back ups. These have always been expanded practice opportunities for schools, but the portal and CFP are altering that before our eyes. Bet 12 goes to 16 then 24 then 32 within the next 5-10 years.

I saw one doofus say ND should just schedule all G5 teams. My response? What makes you think you could beat all of them?

@kelly_32 I'm disappointed. This is the best IU team in my lifetime. I wanted to play an undefeated OSU in the B10 championship (check!) and then face an SEC team (check!) and ND in our CFP run. Exercise as many demons as we could and if we get beat, fair and square: fine. But, ND bowing out of any bowl games like pissed off children at the playground is good, although not unexpected.

@all4you Or just do the logical thing and go to a 16 team playoff, and then all these teams get in. Honestly for CFP it sucks excluding ND. Yes, it's on them that they lost those 2 games, but obviously they've righted the ship and are playing like one of the 10 best teams in the country. For the integrity of the sport, it sucks that they aren't in.

PS, and while they're at it, move the Bball tournament to the logical 64 teams too and do away with the stupid First Four games. While teams 13-16 might have a chance at a NC in football, teams 65-68 have no shot at a NC in basketball. Why is doing the obvious thing so hard for them?
