No, DeBoer, the SEC is NOT the best conference in the country

I agree there is an argument to be made that the SEC is deeper, but I won't give three shits about that when I am salting my margarita with the dried tears of SEC fans while watching the IU-OSU rematch in the national championship.

@surjay Yes, the top of the B1G dog walked the top of the SEC last season, and it's probable it will happen again. But that does encompass the entire conference.

Look, I can't stand the SEC media bullshit--Finebaum and his ilk can go f*** a gator, a bulldog, or an elephant. But there are more teams in the SEC capable of taking down a highly-ranked squad. You think, for example, USC (Big Ten #4) would beat Bama, Texas, or Oklahoma? Doubtful.

Dude, it wasn't just "the top." Last year postseason:

  • Ohio State beat Tennessee in the CFP
  • Ohio State beat Texas in the CFP
  • Michigan beat Alabama in the Reliaquest Bowl
  • USC beat Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl
  • Illinois beat South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl

The SEC's ONLY win was Mizzou over Iowa in the Music City Bowl.

Yes, I think USC would give both Alabama and Texas a game and potentially beat them.  Hell, Texas lost to a bad UF team this season.  Alabama lost to a bad Florida State team and struggled to beat a bad Auburn team last week.

I don't buy the argument that the SEC is better "top to bottom" than the Big Ten.  As I said earlier, many SEC teams pad their records at the expense of  a late-season patsy, and the SEC plays only 8 conference games (I recognize that will change next year).  This season, both conferences have six teams with losing records.  For the 16-team SEC, that's a higher percentage of losing teams than the B1G.  In any event, who cares about the bottom? Losers, regardless of the conference.

@big-ryan You realize you're trying to make your case about THIS season, right? Basing your argument on last season's bowl results is a losing strategy.

Do better.

@jackskip23 pre nil/portal. The playing field has been leveled. B1G has won the past 2 titles. B1G dominated the sec in the postseason last year head-to-head. The past is the past.

Pretty sure jackskip = ordfan. FWIW.

@gthomas What?  I addressed a specific point you made about last season.

My argument is that the Big Ten has become the best football conference in the country.  I've supported that argument with recent developments including the last two national championships, last season's bowl results, and developments this season.

Disagreement is fine but the "do better" comment doesn't advance the discussion.

@unclemark What is an "ordfan?" An average Joe?  A guy from Chicago?

One year really doesn’t wipe out two decades, but it’s a fun debate. Their obviously deeper than the Big Ten, but the BT definitely looks better at the top.

Isn't the debate over which conference is better this year?

If so, who cares what happened two decades ago, one decade ago, etc.?

It is, so we’ll find out at the end of the CFP. Right now, the SEC certainly looks deeper, while the Big Ten looks better at the top.

Pretty sure I’m not. I do remember when you tried to talk football on the Peegs board, though. LOL.

Mark tried to chase me around on the old board because he was a huge LEO supporter and I was not. He must not want to let that go.

@big-ryan….pretty sure SEC is moving to 9 game conference schedule next year.

They are. The mid-November cupcakes are embarrassing for them. Every other conference is in the stretch run and they take a dinner break. It’s hurt their credibility but, more importantly, attendance and tv ratings for them have suffered. Sounds like their media partners leaned on them.

@gthomas nothing about this season says the SEC is better except their entire league was overrated from day one and they've coasted on that all year. Same as last year when this same outdated argument was made and the B1G dominated them across the board.

It's a tired argument fueled by ESPN and ancient history and needs to die.

@surjay I despise ESPN and everything associated with the SEC, but I happen to think it's stronger 1-18. You think otherwise. Differing opinions, that's all. Regardless, the Championship trophy will be in the hands of the B1G again ... and that's what really matters.
