INDIANA Fernando Mendoza's QB elite arm is turning heads among NFL scouts. ESPN Mel Kiper & Field Yates listed Mendoza(6-5, 225lbs.) on their "First Draft". Yates gushed over his arm.
"This kid is legit," said Yates. "He makes a lot of cool throws. He makes a lot of confident throws that I'm not sure other QBs would even see"
Mendoza is now at INDIANA, imagine what he could do for the Hoosiers which made the CFP last season. Head coach Curt Cignetti has said Mendoza's arm is stronger than former starter, Kurtis Rourke, who tied for the FBS's 10th most passing TDs, 29 last season.
That is pretty impressive. I hope he can see the field and make decisions like Rourke did last fall. We might be in for another great ride this fall! Or even better?
great catch on this article.by Clark Dalton, Yardbarker

BEAT PURDUE
Rourke needs to pan out in the NFL and if he does IU could get a reputation as a QB destination. Now that would be fun.
BEAT PURDUE
And the beat goes on.
Agree getting Mendoza a great draft pick would help us with our QB development reputation.
But frankly we already have that rep given we got Fernando. We beat out UGA and Miami who have much more money than us. I’m sure other schools were interested too. I’m still very impressed we landed him.

I have to believe (hope?) that once you're past a certain point, other factors have to play a larger role than the money. And if that's not the case, then take a pass on the guy.
Are those scouts at practices? I guess we had an open one?
And yes, pass on the ones all about money. But if I were them, wouldn't take more than about 15% max discount for the 'right fit'. That's serious bucks. There's usually multiple good fits.
Even our defensive coordinator didn't seem to take a discount. He even reopened his recruiting.
I just realized how bizarre it is that many college QBs (and maybe other players at a few schools) are paid more than our very good coordinators. Who run the entire side.
@walt542 Cory Kinan on his Daft on Draft series did a in-depth breakdown and charted Mendoza's throws a couple months ago. Has him as QB1
SB Nation also has Mendoza as QB1
Yahoo Sports has Mendoza as QB1
And on the betting lines that just dropped, Mendoza currently has the 10th best odds (+3000) of being drafted #1. Funny enough, his odds for Heisman are significantly worse (+5000 to +11000 depending on sportsbook), even though its pretty low chances he goes #1 without the Heisman
IU has never had a QB with this much potential before, its going to be so much fun seeing what Cig and Shanahan cook up having a guy with all the natural tools
@unclemark We got a really big discount on Mendoza. From what Ive read it seems like the number is in the 1.8 to 2 million range for Mendoza.
Miami and Georgia both wanted Mendoza as their priority before Beck made any decisions, and Miami ended up paying Beck 4 million after we landed Mendoza
Im sure Beck would get a little more just from having the profile of being the QB of Georgia for 2 years anyways, but that is still a huge discount
Duke is paying their QB transfer from Tulane a boatload more than we are paying Mendoza as well
The flipside is if Mendoza doesn't have a very strong year, then the rep of Cignetti and Shanahan with QBs will take a hit.
So, just gotta do it!

Yep. Fernando is focused on being prepared to maximize his NFL payday, which of course is so much bigger than NIL/rev share it’s not even worth comparing them.
@hoosierdaddy this is all very good news. I am very excited to see what he can do. He certainly has the tools. Also intrigued to see what Whitmer can add to the pie.
