On teams making a run for Cignetti...why would he leave IU (granted support doesn't disappear)?

Same with Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for one of these jobs.

The only things they offer that IU can't is an insane fan base who will turn on you at the first sign of distress and the chance to get fired.

Cig is 64. He's at a job where he won't get canned. To leave for a job where if you do get fired at 66 or 67, he probably retires.

Don't let Stew Mandel and these national guys fool you, the appeal of jobs or the ranking of what's the best job have changed in college football.

The UK opening (basketball) and the Bama opening (football) goes to show you that coaches aren't willing to jump to these elite/blue-blood programs if they're at a P4 program.  Coach Cig wasn't going anywhere, even if he wasn't 67.  Freeman is at a historic program.  He's not going anywhere.  Kiffin might flirt with some teams just to get an extension.  He's not going anywhere. The days of ADs plucking the big name are over.  They're actually going to have to evaluate what they need with coaches that might be available and not look for that splashy hire.  So many times I don't think ADs look for coaches that coach the fundamentals, can recruit high school, and the portal at this point.  Coach Cig has made it evident that you can recruit the portal, have immediate success and slowly fold in the high school players.  Who thought that little ol' IU football would have a hand in ushering in change in college football? Go IU!

i think your UK example for basketball was on point with them landing a former player having modest success.  He was a bit suspect coming in there and wasn’t a hige splashy hire.  Pope started really strong at BYU and tailed off before going to UK.
Bama, on the other hand….DeBoer was a very hot commodity coming off the national championship game against Michigan.  He was trending very hot after that season and Bama jumped on him.  Of course, he stepped into a pressure cooker down there.

@auburnhoosier They won't go this route, but if I were them, I'd change course, and hire a guy like John Sumrall, from Tulane.  Young guy, has shown he'll win games.

Pay him 7-8 million a year.  Give him enough money to pay coordinators 4-5 million a year, so he can attract no brainer elite coordinators that fit his program.  And fund the staff well enough that the coordinators and he can go get elite level position coaches as well.  Make sure a few of those guys have proven to be able to recruit SEC territory well.

Let them do their job with the immense talent they'll be able to bring in to LSU.

Yeah I agree they won't go that route.  All of the SEC schools think they can get the quick fix.  Might as well sign them to 6 yr, $60M conteacts.

Wow. Just saw where the governor said their AD (Woodward) won’t be picking the next coach. Could you imagine the governor of Indiana dictating a coaching search at IU? That whole situation seems like a hot mess and if I was a hot coach I would stay as far removed from it as possible. Sometimes the hot name isn’t necessarily the right fit and they are going to end up picking someone who has all the buzz but isn’t the right fit for their program to succeed just like BK.

@olympian97 I can imagine the Chairman of the BoT dictating our MBB coach search!

But yea, LSU is a highly political job.  Great resources and HS talent pipeline... but a coach has to be able to handle a lot of noise.

Deboer was Bama's fourth offer I think.  Bama fans have very little patience.  If they don't win a NC this year, and I don't think they will,  it could be a shirt contract for Deboer.  Auburn could beat them or TA&M in the SEC championship.   Last year and the FSU loss are indicators much like the IUPFW game under miller.  The question is, how often this happens in the SEC with their 9 game SEC schedule.

All good points.  Bama fans have a “win immediately” mindset or your leash tightens dramatically.

@thehoosierhuddle seems LSU power brokers have zero self awareness.

@spartans9312 Do you know why he was fired from that job? It wasn’t because of his performance.

Yes. Guice. But the truth is they let him go because they thought he caught lightening in a bottle and once he lost his coordinators he wasn't very good.

@spartans9312 Coach O burned himself out of the job, I remember reading some pretty crazy articles about his behavior leading up to his termination, as in he was hitting on the pregnant wife of one the guys he reported to

@iunorth Sumrall would be great. He's entrenched in the state already (big deal in recruiting). He's a really good coach too.

LSU is almost a unicorn in that kids in that state grow up wanting to go to LSU, so when they get the offer, it takes a lot for them to not end up there at some point in their career.

How many kids decommitted after Franklin got canned?  A handful or so was within like 8 hours.  LSU doesn't have a single decommit yet, and actually flipped a kid a couple days ago from Louisiana.

A competent coach should crush there.

Ha, I knew he was getting out of control there, but I didn’t know it was that bad!

@hoosierdaddy supposedly he did more than hitting. Although could call it that.
