A few takeaways from the conversation with the Committee Chair.

1.  Long debate about who was #1 between IU and Ohio St.

2.  Slight nod to Ohio St. due to having a perceived edge on D and in the trenches.

3.  Given number 2 above, one could infer they believe Indiana has the better Offense and Secondary.

4.  Poor journalism to not take the opportunity to ask a follow-up on the evaluation process to determine who is the better team in the trenches.

5.  Who is better in the trenches is probably the utterly most subjective opinion to factor in.  LMAO

Onward and upward, 1 play at a time, 1-150, never affected by prior success or failure

@middawg I wouldn’t say poor journalism. You get one question. That’s it.

@middawg So let me get this straight.  Instead of looking at numbers and metrics, the committee decided who would be #1 like pundits on ESPN?

Yea, this was the one quote that stood out to me -- they really went away from the resume analysis stuff and did the old "eye test."  It's getting pretty granular to look at OL/DL.  But, committees always have subjective factor wiggle room and this is it.

Before the ranking each conference is given a chance to make a case for their teams.  I cringe to think about the effort the B1G put into us vs. OSU.  Maybe I'm wrong though and just being an old bitter IU fan.

I don't know -- there is a case for us based on resume and there is a case for OSU and their performances to date, and, fair or unfair, perceived upside from "talent."  Whatever.

It doesn't really matter at this stage.  If we keep playing well we'll get to play them and find out who's better.

You think any conference, especially the SEC (and ESPN), would allow anything other than men and woman in smoke filled rooms decided who's in and who's out when there is big money on the line?

They use metrics to make a story once they get it all decided.

@jj_mcclure I would say it was the opposite. They watched a lot of film, relied on the former coaches on the committee and then when things got super close relied on head-to-head and metrics.

Relying just on metrics heavily weighted to a certain conference is what certain channels do

That's why I'm fine with Ohio State ahead of us. They played a 'big game' against an SEC team. Our big game was within the conference. Intra conference tough games aren't as good as inter-conference for seeding a playoff. Although just one game at Ohio State at the start of the year is weak data too.

I mainly wanted Ohio State ahead of us to help a small amount to keep the players focused on Penn State. I did not want a story of the week to be about being number one.

@openwheel - In most cases, I agree with this logic.  That being said, I don't think this team is ever unprepared or overconfident.  We have enough evidence to show they are forever hungry.

We are about to embark on an attempt to win a national championship and the one question we don't know is the limitations of their confidence.  Being #1 will certainly make them feel like the alpha dawg (or bison) in the room going into the playoffs.  It also would incite a TON of animosity across the nation (especially OSU) giving our players more fire under their belly to do what they're the best at....proving people wrong.

Either way, beating OSU and earning #1 will accomplish the confidence part. Especially after we know everyone will be picking OSU to win again.

@yothn as it stands right now, I like the path we’d have as the 2. I really don’t think seeding matters all that much between 1 and 2. None of the bowls are particularly close to IU.

To be #1 going into the playoffs will require winning the Big 18 championship game (along with the 3 games leading up to it), so the difference between 1 and 2 is meaningless at this point. They can settle it on the field. If IU stays focused on healthy that should be a fun game.

@regionhoosier I agree. It'll work it's self out (usually). If it started today, I like the pat of the 2 seed. Winner of BYU-ND, win that you get winner of TAMU vs. Ole Miss/Virginia

Number of B1G games giving up 2 or more defensive TDs.

1. Indiana 0/6
2. Ohio St. 2/5
3/4. Iowa/Oregon 3/5
5. Michigan 4/6

So who is playing the best defense again?

Regarding the better O-line Committee Chair comment, are we sure about that?

IU has 2,211 rush yards and 22 rush TDs this season.

Ohio St has 1,226 rush yards and 13 rush TDs.

Indiana 5.7 ypc to Ohio St.'s 4.6 ypc

To be fair, the committee could have said, "IU was within one Iowa first down of losing a game" and OSU hasn't been in peril in a game like that so far this season.  That is not to say I'm not a super proud IU fan and give our team a ton of props for winning at Kinnick (where top ranked teams go to die).  Still, it remains to be seen just how tough Iowa is and their matchup with Oregon is intriguing as hell.
