On the old site, I put together an article that ranked the fits for all new Hoosiers in the NFL. It's a bit outdated now after free agency, trades, and cuts occurred, but I'll paste it here in case anyone is interested:

Ranking The Fits For Indiana Draft Picks and UDFA's

The 2025 NFL Draft has now officially concluded and your Indiana Hoosiers had, by all accounts, a successful draft. And, if you don’t already have a favorite NFL team, it might be worth your while to consider the San Francisco 49ers, who made both Hoosiers’ draft selections. CJ West (4th round, 113th overall) and Kurtis Rourke (7th / 227th) will make their way to San Francisco with hopes to make the squad come August / September. Outside of the draft, however, six other Hoosiers as of this writing have signed to teams as Undrafted Free Agents (UDFAs). With the roller coaster of draft weekend and the exciting news of more Hoosiers in the professional ranks, let’s rank each player’s fit with their new teams.

I’d like to add a caveat here that these are all my opinions and I do not wish to take anything away from the significant accomplishment that is making the NFL. I hope all of our Hoosier alumni succeed and am simply ranking their fit with new teams based on how I view the current roster makeup. With that being said, let’s dive into it:

8.) Ke’Shawn Williams, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers have a quarterback problem. That is, they don’t have a reliable quarterback on the roster currently. This bodes major problems for receivers - like Williams. Add that to an already crowded (and star powered) WR room and it doesn’t promote the greatest environment for success for Williams. However, I will never count him out. He proved what he could do on the field during his time in Crimson and Cream.

7.) Jailin Walker, LB, Las Vegas Raiders

Walker was incredible for the Hoosiers in 2024 and was seemingly all over the field at all moments of play. He is fast, strong, and has the intelligence to read offenses. However, he is heavily buried on the depth chart and might need time to break through. He very well could follow in the footsteps of fellow Hoosier Cam Jones in this regard, another UDFA who waited his turn, put in the work, and earned snaps in a Super Bowl.

6.) James Carpenter, DT, Jacksonville Jaguars

Carpenter truly embodied what it meant to be a Hoosier during his time in Bloomington. A motor that never quit, a work ethic that others could be inspired by, and leadership that could motivate a room. That - and his frame - are two things you simply cannot teach. While he is also buried on the depth chart like his former teammates above, his specific position lends itself favorably to big bodied guys who work hard. If he finds favor under the new coaching regime in Jacksonville, Carpenter could see some snaps in the future.

5.) Myles Price, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Remember Whop Philyor, another former WR for the Hoosiers? He signed as a UDFA with the Vikings a few years ago. So the Vikings might have their eye on Bloomington WR’s as breakout speedster Myles Price recently joined the team in Minnesota. Minnesota, of course, has Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison clogging up two holes in the depth chart. Beyond those two, however, there is space to grab. 3rd round pick Tai Felton joins the team and Rondale Moore is there as well, but there is no true bonafide star in the slot for the Vikings. With a good camp, Price can turn heads and show that he belongs. There is opportunity here.

4.) Zach Horton, TE, Detroit Lions

Of course, the Lions have all-pro tight end Sam LaPorta on their roster. However, the 2nd string tight end spot is wide open for the taking. Could Zach Horton, a player with 4 years of experience playing in a pro style offense with Coach Curt Cignetti, make waves with a coach in Dan Campbell who loves to take chances on guys? I see big opportunities here. Horton knows what to do on the field, is a strong blocker, and is a great red zone threat. Dan Campbell must be excited already.

3.) Trey Wedig, OT, Los Angeles Rams

Offensive linemen always have a chance to play, in my opinion. There are often injuries at that position and coaches are often quick to pull a struggling lineman both in-game and in-season. Of course, we aren’t wishing any injuries and we aren’t hoping anyone struggles, just to make that clear. Wedig does join the Rams as basically their 3rd string right tackle right off the bat. He sits behind first stringer and long time veteran Rob Havenstein, who has done a great job during his time in LA and undoubtedly will be a great person for Wedig to learn from. Wedig has the frame to succeed, has elite coaching drilled into him already from IU OL Coach Bob Bostad, and now joins another elite coaching staff led by Sean McVay. Wedig can very easily find himself as part of this roster come the start of the 2025 season.

2.) Kurtis Rourke, QB, San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers QB room is currently the following: Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, Kurtis Rourke, and Tanner Mordecai. Undoubtedly, Purdy is the starter for the foreseeable future in San Francisco, but that backup QB spot is truly up for grabs. Mac Jones signed a 2 year deal with San Francisco at just $5M guaranteed. Thus, the investment in Jones is not high whatsoever. Once Rourke is fully healthy off his ACL tear, he will show the 49ers why their decision to draft him was a good one. From one 7th rounder to another, he could easily become the next Brock Purdy.

1.) CJ West, DT, San Francisco 49ers

CJ West is likely the only Hoosier who could realistically start week one this year in the NFL - and for the historic 49ers defensive front no less. The competition in front of him is either young or non-elite talent, presenting opportunity. The investment of a 4th round pick is no small piece too, as players in this round are still coveted pretty close to the chest and seen with value, with the potential and allure of finding a diamond in the rough. West has the body, compete level, depth chart opportunity, and experience to succeed in the NFL, making him the #1 choice in this rankings.

Thank you for reading and Go Hoosiers!
