We are pulling players from SoCal’s John Bosco. It’s a whole new world.
Hill would be a massive pickup, 6'2 corners dont grow on trees. Only concern is if his listed weight is accurate (170lbs) he probably needs to put on ~30 pounds. Ponds is like 5'9 and weighs 170+
Agree. But seems like half the high rated DBs out of high school, when under six feet, are listed as some very low weight like 160 pounds, then one year into college they are 180+ . As long as he has the frame he'll fill out. 6' 2" that is light, but 170 isnt bad for a HS guy.
@openwheel My concerns arent that you cant get a guy to add weight, its more that he is highly rated (meaning likely costs meaningful NIL $$$) and theres no way he would be able to play as a freshman at that weight/height ratio. Ive been watching OSU and Texas in the portal and they are losing boatloads of guys they invested in who were highly touted out of HS who are leaving right as their turn is coming up
I read that we will have a bunch of kids on campus this weekend. Any names?

Makes me wonder how important HS recruiting really is if teams end up going to the portal for most starters anyway and lose their HS recruits as soon as they become decent.
Definitely a situation that would seem to suggest it isn't a good idea to focus much NIL money on HS recruits. Maybe on OL where getting players to transfer is harder.
@hurryinghoosiers Don't remember exactly when, but Cig said HS recruiting he sees as the foundation of the program. I think you'll always need to augment through the portal to address immediate needs, but I think every class so far the # of portal guys has dropped. This class it seems like we're getting better athletes both in the HS ranks and portal.
@hurryinghoosiers - I know what you're saying but I don't think IU is losing recruits as soon as they become decent. Young guys with talent are getting PT early and are staying. Look at Byron Baldwin as a freshman. He was possibly going to be a starter at the beginning of the season if he wasn't injured. He'll return. Ponds, Sharpe, Hardy and Ferrell started as true sophomores over the last 2 years. Ndukwe ended up being a starter as a true sophomore. These are all just defensive guys, so I think what we are seeing is guys who are able to tell they aren't where they need to be within this roster. That or their situation was such that they were going to leave regardless.
Essentially, that opens up a scholarship to recruit new HS recruits or transfer portal guys over them.
@yothn those guys (outside of Baldwin) were not highly regarded out of HS. I doubt 3* recruits are getting big NIL deals
I for sure would not sign a 5* QB out of HS. OSU once paid Ewers over $1m to ride the bench and he immediately left for Texas the next year
OL is probably worth investing in. But even then you can get got. Michigan paid big money to flip a 5* OT from Alabama this year, he already transferred to Alabama
I just don’t see a way where you can ever have less than 15 portal guys in this era unless more rules come in / guys stop entering the portal at such a ridiculous rate. It’s not sustainable to build a roster when thousands of players jump in the portal each year
@hoosierdaddy - Oh, I'm not talking or worried about their ratings. You need depth and those HS kids will be cheaper than transfer portal kids. To that, you could hit on some really good HS kids at a cheap price so the collective group and costs associated likely make sense in balancing out a roster.
NIL contracts are going to start being written with escrow and clawbacks. Need to be multiyear or you pay less. Cant pay frosh big money to develop then they leave for other schools. And somebdy else got that development free. Not as bad for upperclassmen, you got production before they left.
Like the NFL had the similar problem of rookies contracts escalating way past quality veterans so they put in a wage scale.
Guys like Becker, Hardy, Jones, etc. are HS kids that were great investments. Sure you will have some fall out but Cig and his guys are much better evaluators than the Texas and OSU guys. He is building it up.@openwheel My concerns arent that you cant get a guy to add weight, its more that he is highly rated (meaning likely costs meaningful NIL $$$) and theres no way he would be able to play as a freshman at that weight/height ratio.
