I still think using Fernando Valenzuela inspired “FernandoMania” merch is a winner for Mendoza.  

but Jr was asking me what a cool nickname for him would be and I think we’ve struck gold for a future Heisman campaign.

Well ... the name Mendoza originated in the Basque region of Spain and translates to "cold mountain". There's some information to work with.

The Basque Bomber ? The Basque bullet?

I'm sure someone can come up with a better nickname.
