During the summer "sports dead zone" I occasionally watch old college football games or documentaries. I came across a "Saturdays in the South" documentary series on the history of the SEC and it was actually pretty well done. Watching it got me thinking: who is your favorite non-IU team to watch currently? (which program do you admire and enjoy how they play) Second, going back into any era, what program/team did you love watching?
I'll start the discussion by answering:
1. I live about 20 minutes from Clemson and admire how Dabo Swinney runs his program so Clemson is one for me. The second choice is Kansas State...Avery Johnson is exciting and I admire the consistency of the KSU program. Third, I actually enjoy watch Army and Navy. I know many think the style is boring but I consider it unique, difficult to prepare for and when they have a QB capable of executing it at a high level, really enjoyable to watch.
2. The first non-IU program I really remember becoming infatuated with was Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators. I remember when he was hired and the revelation his first couple of teams were and then I remember getting close through the early and mid-90s and how unstoppable they seemed if they had a good QB. Spurrier seemed totally different than every other coach and it was a blast to listen to his honesty.
Admittedly, this is a "nerdy" CFB topic but that's what you're going to get from me!
Not sure how much I "love" watching them but the second team I follow would be Virginia after moving to Charlottesville 19 years ago. They've had a couple decent football seasons in that span but nothing remarkable. Super bummed IU cancelled the upcoming series.
Tennessee with Peyton, and then a little while after he left. I was a kid but then started getting more and more into IUFB. Thankfully my patience has finally paid off haha.
After living 10 years on Whidbey Island Washington I become a Husky fan but they were never my #1 team. BUT I found after they moved to the B1G, my feelings changed a little bit plus I could not stand their new "car salesman" coach. So I am not sure who my "second team" is now.

Whomever is playing Purdue was this a trick question??
BEAT PURDUE
Well, both my wife and I went to East Tennessee State so we follow them. We lived in Georgia for 13 years so we follow UGA football. Started following IU when we moved here in 2006 and more when our oldest went to IU. Our younger went to Iowa State so we follow them as well and then my wife has a connection to Butler University so those are the main programs we follow.
I live in Elkhart and will cheer for whoever is playing Notre Dame. I'll even root for Purdue over them. This made our CFP loss sting worse knowing it was Notre Dame.
A couple of years ago, I got fed up with all the losing and was sick and tired of IU football purring me in a crappy mood so I decided I’d pick a second team.
I couldn’t pick a team that was already great so I went with Texas A&M primarily because they are an adidas school and my high school’s colors are burgundy and white.
I agree with you about whoever is playing ND. Although, if it is Purdue, that is the one time I want ND to win.
Do you still live on Whidbey? Our youngest daughter and S-I-L are there. Beautiful place!
@esalum86 I do not and never expected to move. I lived out near Ft Eby SP. But when they changed the laws to allow logging and logging trucks on the island in 1995 I knew my days there were numbered. Then a job offer from an old friend I couldn't refuse had be back in Southern Indiana.
I stopped by in 2003(?) or was it 2002, before DiNardo's Hoosiers played the next day at UDub .. but have never returned. I still have many friends that live there, that keep me updated. I read their Island newspaper regularly.
But yes ... simply beautiful out there.
