False starts

IU was penalized for multiple false starts during the Oregon game in October.  The notorious Autzen Stadium crowd noise was certainly a factor, but Oregon's DL contributed with their frequent (and probably illegal) shifts prior to the snap. (There was also a blatant pass interference by an Oregon defensive back - - hanging onto Sarratt - - that was not called).  Cignetti clearly was unhappy with the officiating.

A rule change was implemented prior to the 2025 college football season.  It reads:

Team Pre-Snap Movement
Any defensive team player within one yard of the line of scrimmage (stationary or not) may not make quick and abrupt or exaggerated actions that simulate action at the snap and are not part of normal defensive player movement in an obvious attempt to make the offense foul. This will continue as a point of emphasis in the game. The offense will be held to the same standard as any pre-snap movement that simulates action at the snap is a foul on the offense for a false start.

Hopefully Friday's officiating crew will be all over this in case Lanning resorts to this tactic again.

Autzen is incredibly loud and a tough environment to function at a high level in. Some truly believe they get a 10pt homefield advantage.

I get that Oregon is upset because they lost to IU the first time, but this isn't like OSU losing to Oregon and then OSU coming back to beat them in the playoffs.  Oregon SQUEAKED past OSU and it was at home last year.  Getting Oregon away from Autzen makes things easier.  People dog Indiana for playing a close game to Penn State but h3ll, IU beat them in regulation.  Oregon needed 2 overtimes to beat them.  IU beat Iowa by 5 (really 7 if you don't count the unnecessary safety) and Oregon won by 2 on a last second 40yd FG.  At Washington it was 19-14 with 8 mins to play.

Anyway, this Oregon team on the road is not going to be as much of an uphill climb as the media and everyone else is going to try and make you believe.  Any game can be close because they're throwing an odd-shaped pig skin balloon around a painted meadow but I fully expect IU to come out of this game as America's darling.

... may not make quick and abrupt or exaggerated actions that simulate action at the snap and are not part of normal defensive player movement in an obvious attempt to make the offense foul....

Is the forward fist pump (when jumping sideways) a normal part of the pre-snap movement? Because Oregon did that forward arm pump a few times and got away with it. They were slimey as hell.

Hope we dont tie ourselves in knots worrying about it though. Rather blast off and pancake the defender and accept the 5 yards. Oops...

@yothn …..I’m with you…..things can happen but I think we are just better than the Ducks!
I think we handle them easier this time.

My cousin in Seattle is a Washington fan.  He says they do it every game.  Hopefully the refs are less lenient on it this time, as it is bullshit.

Which conference will be sending the Referees to the Peach Bowl? That will be the key to getting those types of calls...

Here’s my expectation:

If Oregon pulls that shit again, Cig needs to go off on the referee. I mean f’ing lose it. I assume there will be a respectful convo with the referee before the game regarding this.

@big-ryan

That tactic is very effective especially when the offense has to use a silent count.  That won't be the case on Friday because the crowd is going to be 89/20 in favor of IU. A silent count should not be needed.

I'm more worried about how the refs call PIs. I just rewatched the Oregon game and man did they have a lot of PIs. One big one was missed on a third down in the first half, and an earlier one could have just as easily been called. All told, their PIs (called and uncalled) were definitely net benefits for them, (saved at least one TD) although on most we did a good job of converting.

If the crew Friday, though, allows physical corner play, it could easily swing the game.  We were very, very even in that game at Oregon.

There was some home cooking in that game in October.  That won't be the case Friday.  And, as some have noted above, if the Ducks try that illegal shift again they're unlikely to get away with it.

These teams aren't where they were in October.  They've both improved, although some of Oregon's progress is probably hampered by their now thin RB group.

Glad somebody else has brought this up as I was talking to friends the other day about this. Think we were flagged 6 times for this and if we were 3rd and 2 or 3, then get the penalty, now we’re 3rd and 7/8. We should be used to this shit now and it will be easier to maintain drive along with the fact that the crowd will be in our favor…...forgot about the PI’s as that is a good point
