When asked for a similarity about Josh Hoover and Fernando Mendoza, he claims "well they both play quarterback"
The standard is the standard. Cignetti says you need the right leaders to maintain the standard. He knows that he has the right people.
The team is going to be more similar than different from last year's team. That's how he stays successful.
@hoosiernation1887 I think it was more directed at the SEC. Maybe I missed some context.
@tammany You're right him saying 'Midwest' certainly frames up who he was talking about. I do feel though nobody whined and complained more recently about getting left out of the playoff than ND last year. Particularly given they withdrew from the Poptart Bowl.
Well, if we get left out of a playoff this year or future years - when our resume looks stronger to us fans and maybe Cig and staff - a lot of people will bring up that last Cig comment. If there's any complaining by fans, big ten media, or for sure coaches.
But I am confident Cig would state his case while also saying we left doubt, left it to a committee and that's our own fault. And then he'd move on to his next most pressing work.
Most coaches do that though. But there are a few high profile whiners out there. Also, I remember Cig questioning why we didn't get a home game, in 2024.
It's driven by ESPN and FOX and other media. Which teams are in or out is money to them.
@openwheel You can argue him questioning why we didn't get a home game lead to the change the following season of straight seeding vs. the top 4 conf champions getting the top 4 seeds.
Maybe. Just as his riff on the 'SEC scheduling philosophy' may have pushed them toward 9 league games, lol.
But I think it was other weaker schools getting the favorable seeding that pushed that change. Not us missing out on a home game. We were widely still viewed as a bit of a fluke that had benefited from a weak big ten schedule. And losing on the road to a very tough Notre Dame team somehow was used to further that view.
It's fine if coaches question something that happened. It only becomes whining if they don't drop it and keep talking about it for months.

Yeah, I remember after losing to Ohio State and Notre Dame Cig pointed out they were on the road, and maybe that one should've been at home for us. Then within days all I heard out of Cig was how he knew what we needed to improve. He had moved on to the next season right away. (And I guess that worked out OK
)
That was a epic quote from Cig

Another tidbit from Media Day was the news that Ajani will move from tackle to guard and Joe Brunner will kick out to tackle
