Just a joke.
OT I know, but I couldn't resist commentary on the state of our basketball reputation.
They made the basketball season meaningless with 64+. Let’s just play the season as a tournament at this point.
They kind of did all you really need in a power 5 conference is a .500 record to make the ncaa most of the time. But bowl games are the same you can go 3-5 in the big ten and still make some meaningless bowl game.
Oh my how times have changed. Just 2 years ago we would have been thrilled by 3-5 in the Big Ten and making a bowl game. I hope we do not forget from whence we came and start sounding entitled like some other programs that I despise. They made the basketball season meaningless with 64+. How to eliminate Conference Championship game? Big 10 (18 teams) should divvy up into 2 divisions which could be different each year or not and play each team once in their division for 8 games. Then the 9th game becomes a position week where 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3........ That gets all teams to 9 conference games and shouldn't need an extra conference title game. Tiebreakers are a bit messy as this is not perfect but what is. Or maybe you don't have divisions but it is 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5v6.......etc after 8 games are played. I think divisions are better since it would eliminate potentially playing a team 2 times.
I feel NCAA should be capped at 16 teams. At 24, some teams will play 12 regular season games and potentially 5 playoff games if they go all the way to the final without bye. Maybe 18 if they play conference championship game and don't have bye week.

There's some not unimportant logistics involved in having your final game of the season be TBD until the Saturday preceding. You'd have to have pre-determined locations...so then you're right back at essentially a conference championship game situation, but you're taking it out of your regular season game mix/revenue. Not impossible, I suppose. Definitely outside the box. Part of this was in Pettiti's original 24-team plan and it got no support outside of the conference members.
@sig The NCAA does not control the playoff. It's a different entity. The Big Ten had this in the works during the COVID year and it didn't come to fruition because of cancelations. I liked the idea. The Pac-12 (8?) is doing it this year with 7 conference games and the final week of conference play being a flex week. We'll see how it goes. Logistics shouldn't be too bad.
@gros-louis I would just eliminate conference championship games altogether. Alabama and the SEC nearly saw what could happen when you get your butt kicked and there was a legit argument that they should have dropped after that loss and it's not worth the risk for the losing team.
Playing a flex week 12 or week 13 game shouldn't be logistically impossible. Teams should kind of have an idea where they are going by week 9 or 10.
I like the idea, but I doubt it actually happens. As I said in the podcast if you can clear the slate and restart everything from scratch you can make a 24-team playoff much easier.
The biggest hurdles to clear are 1) Money and Decision Makers 2) Conference Sizes 3) How to compare teams accurately (if possible)
The main benefit of the 24 team format is that all of the money that would have been lost from the now-cancelled conference championship games is recouped from the play-in games and then the round of on-campus games. New TV contract for the games getting you down to 8! Money talks.
