Was reading an article and it mentioned that Alberto said he was going to come back to Indiana and try and beat out Hoover for the starting job. Glad we were able to keep him
Nothing against Hoover, but I'd love to see a Mendoza leading IU again next season.
Hoover vs. Alberto would be one heck of a competition for the QB job.

Hoover didn’t come to IU to play backup, & IU didn’t spend millions on Hoover to ride the bench. Kudos to Alberto for his approach, but no way he starts over Hoover.
Hoover is a damn good PROVEN QB. He’s thrown for 9600 yards and 71 TDs in his career at the P4 level and is comfortable in the RPO system.

Yep. If the staff was sold on Alberto they don’t bring in Hoover…
I feel strongly positive with his decision. Steel sharpens steel. AM absolutely starts if he earns it in the offseason. It's the way Coach Cignetti rolls. Either way this falls IU get the best prepared player at the top skill position just like the past 2 seasons. I like Alberto's wheels, part of the reason he has an excellent opportunity. Cignetti has to be elated.
@oneeyedundertaker I agree, but I hope the conversation went something like "we value having a proven QB and see you in the line of Rourke and Mendoza, but at IU our motto is nothing given and everything earned, so you will have to come in and win the job just like they did."

Nobody but Hoover & staff know for sure, but I’ll bet it was something closer to “we see you as our starter next year & the job is yours to lose.” The reality is there’s little chance a kid with NFL hopes & potential is gonna risk his last year of eligibility sitting the bench due to losing out in competition. It’s also a potential red flag for donors if the highest paid player doesn’t see the field. If he crashes & burns after a few games he could certainly be replaced, but he’s the starter next year week 1. If they thought they had qb1 in Alberto this year, they spend those millions somewhere else on the roster…
Good news indeed. I sure didn’t expect this to occur!
Hoover would have to never take a snap and Cig would have to snort cocaine while taking a big crap on the logo at midfield, for any donor to even begin to think red flag... It’s also a potential red flag for donors if the highest paid player doesn’t see the field. ...
@oneeyedundertaker - You need multiple good QBs on the team. The donors only care about winning. The donors would be elated to know if one got hurt, there was another high end QB waiting.
Great decision...
I may be in the minority but I don't see Hoover staying totally healthy throughout a 16 game season..., the bulk of which will be played against Big Ten competition...
In my opinion, Alberto (if he's able to retain the backup position) will not only play, he'll end up playing a lot...
Hoover is about 20 pounds light in the muscle department when it comes to taking Big Ten level hits (in my opinion)... Hopefully, he'll be able to put on another 5-10 pounds between now and next Fall...
