Spring Preview-A Quarterback Battle is Brewing and Everyone Has Something to Prove

Spring Preview-A Quarterback Battle is Brewing and Everyone Has Something to Prove

Written by Nathan Comp

We are under two months away from the Indiana Football spring game and just over a week away from the first spring practice. It is time for Hoosier Huddle’s preview coverage to ramp up after a couple-month break following the season-ending loss to Purdue.

With a new offensive coordinator in town, the expectations are already heightened for Indiana’s 2019 offense. The excitement only grows more when you take a look at the three options Indiana will have at quarterback; each brings a unique skillset but also their own set of questions to the table. The quarterback competition will certainly be on the front of everyone’s mind as the 2019 season draws nearer.

Spring Preview –Running Backs Provides IU with Depth and Talent

Spring Preview –Running Backs Provides IU with Depth and Talent

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The Cream and Crimson game is less than two months away! That means it is time for Hoosier Huddle’s spring preview coverage to ramp up. The first article in our preview series is on one of the deepest and most talented position groups on the Indiana roster: running back. A stellar sophomore returns after a terrific debut season, a fellow sophomore is back after showing flashes in his freshman season and a pair of highly-anticipated freshmen are joining the backfield. This cadre of backs gives new offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer a whole lot to work with. I’ll begin by giving a brief breakdown of each player in the running back room, provide a few things to look from the backs during spring practice and then finish with a projected depth chart.

Spring Practice Starts in Twelve Days, Here is What You Need to Know About IUFB as They Transition into 2019

The Indiana Hoosiers will open their 2019 spring practice session on March 2nd and wrap up with their annual Cream and Crimson game on Friday April 12th. IU is coming off of frustrating back-to-back 5-7 seasons. Tom Allen is entering his third spring as Indiana’s head coach after taking over the helm prior to the Foster Farms Bowl in 2016. His record sits at 10-15 and 4-14 in conference.

The Hoosiers enter spring practice with some recruiting momentum as Allen and his staff inked one of the best classes, if not the best, in school history. However, the Hoosiers also come with plenty of uncertainty.

Over the next couple of weeks HoosierHuddle.com will preview positions, players who may fly under the radar and much more from spring practice, but for right now here are the items surrounding spring ball to watch.

Sampson James is not Worried About Expectations, Just Improvement

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Avon (Ind.) running back Sampon James was one of the biggest recruiting wins for IU in recent memory. The four-star recruit was verbally committed to Ohio State before de-committing and picking the Hoosiers in October. James finished a stellar high school career at Avon with 3,451 rushing yards and a career average of six yards per rush. James also found the end zone 41 times. With great success come big expectations.

Hoosiers Rank 46th in Bill Connelly's 2019 S&P+ Projections

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Bill Connelly of SBNation does a tremendous job with college football analytics and every year he starts his previews for the next season in February. Well, that time is here as Connelly released his S&P+ projections for the 2019 season. According to FootballOutsiders.com S&P+ is figured out by “using the five-factors concept above, the S&P+ ratings take into account efficiency (Success Rates), explosiveness (IsoPPP), and factors related to field position and finishing drives. It is now presented in two forms: the first is a percentile, and the second is an adjusted scoring margin specific for this specific season's scoring curve.”

Recruiting never ends. Tom Allen and his staff just wrapped up the 2019 recruiting class last Wednesday and now it is time for that group to jump into building another strong class for the 2020 cycle. Junior days play a big role in getting prospects on campus. He is the list of prospects that should be on campus on Sunday. The list was obtained by Matt Weaver of Peegs.com and he gave us written permission to use it. This group in heavy with linemen on both sides of the ball as Indiana has made those positions a priority in the 2020 class once again.
