Indiana heads into Big Ten season 3-0 and looking to make some noise early on as they take on the Michigan State Spartans in Bloomington Saturday night. There are a handful of potential match-ups to watch, but the most intriguing one is can IU keep Michigan State’s struggling rush attack grounded.

The Indiana Hoosiers approached the 2018 season with a remarkably deep backfield. 2017’s freshman standout Morgan Ellison was to team up with the elusive Cole Gest. Behind them, a steady mix of veterans and youth. Seniors Ricky Brookins and Mike Majette figured to provide depth, rounding out a healthy running back corps. Three weeks into the season, none of this has come to fruition. Ellison has since been suspended from the team and Cole Gest tore his ACL in the first game against Florida International after just five carries. One might have thought Indiana’s rushing attack would be dead in the water without those two guys.

Since 1950, the Hoosiers and the Spartans have battled it out on the football field to make for a rivalry matchup. The Old Brass Spittoon is awarded to the team that can seal the victory. The two teams have met 64 times and Michigan State leads the all-time series record 46-16-2. The Hoosiers defeated the Spartans for the first time since 2006 two seasons ago in a nail biter overtime victory in Bloomington. Last season, they traveled to East Lansing and lost 17-9 so this year after a 3-0 start, they are looking to avenge that loss on Saturday.

IU thumped Ball State 38-10 behind a solid offensive effort to improve to 3-0 on the season. Much like last week’s contest against Virginia, the offense took control of the game early, jumping out to a 24-3 lead, but unlike last week, the IU offense finished strong, putting up 14 more points in the second half. Let’s take a closer look at IU’s successful day offensively.
