Keeping the Old Brass Spittoon is the Mission for Indiana this Week

Keeping the Old Brass Spittoon is the Mission for Indiana this Week

Written By Evan McShane (@veryreasonable)

The Old Brass Spittoon currently belongs to the Indiana Hoosiers for the first time since Terry Hoeppner coached IU to a 46-21 win over the Spartans in 2006. Last season, Indiana recaptured the trophy when they beat Michigan State at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington by a score of 24-21 in overtime. Michigan State leads Indiana in the all-time series with 45 wins, only 16 losses, and two ties. Although IU-MSU isn’t heralded as a classic college football rivalry, which both teams now in the same division, things could heat up if the Hoosiers can do more of what they did last year. The trophy, the Old Brass Spittoon, wasn’t introduced to the series until 1950.

Matchup to Watch: Indiana's Haydon Whitehead vs. Michigan's Brad Robbins

This is one of the most important games on IU’s schedule. A win over Michigan on Saturday makes the Hoosiers 4-2 and the conversation for 7 and 8 wins becomes very very real. After struggling on offense for most of the year against Power 5 competition, the Wolverines were exposed by Michigan State in a home loss last week. John O’Korn will start again this week as Wilton Speight battles a back injury, which probably means the offense won’t be as explosive (if it was before). This will likely lead to a lot of punts, especially when you consider the fact that IU’s defense is playing really well and playing at home. This weekend could very well be a punter’s paradise, which would not be easy on the eyes.

What: Indiana Hoosiers (2-2) vs. Charleston Southern Buccaneers (2-2)

When: Saturday, October 7 at 3:30 pm

Where: Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, IN

How to Watch: The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. Fans can also listen to the game on the IU Radio Network with the legendary Don Fischer on the call.

What’s at Stake: If Indiana is to reach a bowl game for the third straight season, this is a game they have to win. That is first and foremost. After the outcome, the biggest things IU will need to accomplish are establishing an offensive identity and rhythm, building a bit of confidence before facing Michigan next Saturday and hopefully avoiding any more costly injuries to an already battered squad.

Change of Direction: Ramsey is IU’s New QB1 as Buccaneers Come to Bloomington

Change of Direction: Ramsey is IU’s New QB1 as Buccaneers Come to Bloomington

Written by: TJ Inman

After four uneven offensive performances, Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers announced they are pulling the plug on the two-quarterback system they have employed so far. Peyton Ramsey, a redshirt freshman from Ohio, will be the starter and the unquestioned first-team quarterback moving forward. No more rotation and, for now, no more Richard Lagow, for IU’s offense as they look to steady a unit that has looked explosive at times but lacks an identity and has gone long stretches without being able to produce points.

Match-up to Watch: Indiana's Tegray Scales Against Penn State's Saquon Barkley

Match-up to Watch: Indiana's Tegray Scales Against Penn State's Saquon Barkley

Written By Alex Compton (@Alexncompton)

IU was finally back on the field last Saturday, and looked the part of a postseason team by nearly all accounts. Except for the injuries it was nearly a perfect game from the Hoosiers, as they were leading 31-0 before the Eagles of Georgia Southern scored a single point. They ran over half of their plays in “garbage time” which shows just how much Tom Allen’s squad dominated on Saturday, and hopefully they have some positive momentum to carry into a certainly daunting task in Happy Valley this weekend. Penn State is currently projected as a College Football Playoff team by most media outlets, and many of those same outlets have their best player as the Heisman favorite after his monster game against Iowa. As all great matchups should be, this one involves the stars of their respective teams, Scales and Barkley.
