The Indiana Hoosiers improved to 2-0 with a comfortable 92-69 victory over the Bellarmine Knights in the first-ever regular season meeting between the two schools. Duke transfer Darren Harris scored 15 points in the first half on his way to a career-high 23 points with five made three-pointers and Bryce Lindsay added 13 first-half points as the Hoosiers scored 50 points in the game’s first 20 minutes. Harris and Lindsay (15) were joined in double-figures by Sam Alexis (12) and Aiden Sherrell (12).
The visitors from Louisville found some success in the paint during the second half as Indiana’s defensive intensity and ball pressure dropped off. The Knights finished with 36 points in the paint, something that will undoubtedly be irksome for Darian DeVries. Indiana responded to a run from Bellarmine that cut the IU lead to 18 points by getting active on the glass and racking up the second-chance points. The Hoosiers finished with 18 offensive rebounds and won the battle on the boards by a margin of 16, paced by six rebounds each from Aiden Sherrell, Sam Alexis and Trent Sisley.
Indiana shared the ball well on offense and had 12 made triples with 15 assists. The only negative for Indiana’s offense was the struggle for Markus Burton. Indiana’s point guard was 0-7 from the field and fouled out.
The competition level picks up substantially for IU in their next outing as the Hoosiers take on the Syracuse Orange on Monday evening at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
