Opponent: Minnesota Golden Gophers

Location: Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, IN

Why They Played:

The Hoosiers and Gophers met for the first time since 2021 and just the fifth time since 2007.

What The Game Meant:

With no truly elite team in college football in 2026, Indiana just needs to keep winning. Saturday was the final game before the Hoosiers’ bye week. IU limped to an 8-1 record through those nine games, but the win keeps their Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Players of the Game

Offense

Charlie Becker, Wide Receiver, Indiana

Charlie Becker got untracked when Grant Wilson came in relief of Josh Hoover. He made eight catches for 149 yards and the game winning touchdown. Becker’s catch on a back shoulder throw also set up Paddy McAteer’s 60-yard field goals.

Grant Wilson, Quarterback, Indiana

Wilson was called on to replace an injured Josh Hoover and gave the Hoosiers the spark they needed on offense. It took him a drive or two to get back into the speed of the game, but Wilson helped led IU to a comeback win He made several huge throws to Becker and Marsh while using his legs to get things going on the ground. He finished 9-17 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown. He added 26 rushing yards on 4 carries.

Javon Tracy, Wide Receiver, Minnesota

Tracy was Minnesota’s most explosive offensive player. He had seven catches for 40 yards and was targeted 10 times.

Defense

Jacob Savage, Linebacker, Indiana

In a spot start due to Rolijah Hardy tweaking his back in warmups, Savage filled in very well. He made the game’s first tackle and nearly had a huge interception late as well. He finished with four tackles, one for a loss and two pass breakups.

Byron Baldwin, Defensive Back, Indiana

Baldwin was a menace off the edge. He forced a fumble that set up an IU touchdown. He finished with seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.

TJ Bush, Defensive Line, Minnesota

Bush had a tackle for loss, quarterback hurry and a pass break up that led to an interception.

Special Teams Performance

Indiana kicker Paddy McAteer dug IU out of the grave that the rest of the special teams unit put them in. If there was something to screw up, they did it (outside of kickoff). The field goal operation was a mess with a couple bad snaps, a blocked and missed field goal. Indiana left plenty of points on the field yet again.

Punter Billy Gowers picked a bad time to have his worst game as a Hoosier. He had an 11 yard punt that dropped his average for the game down to 36.4 yards.

Indiana also needs to figure out their punt return unit as well. Charlie Becker looks lost back there and the Hoosiers have lost a lot of yards in the return game because of it. While Daniel Ndukwe got a break not being called for a roughing the punter on Minnesota’s first punt.

This unit needs to be fixed as soon as possible and heavily evaluated during the bye week.

Key Stat(s)

11 for -39 yards

Saturday was a funky box score. If you only look at the box score, Indiana should have won by 3 touchdowns. The Hoosiers outgained the Gophers 419 to 215 and averaged 2.5 more yards per play as well. However, the biggest factor in IU’s win was the havoc created by the defense. IU had 11 tackles for loss that lost 39 yards for Minnesota.

Turning Point

When Grant Wilson hit Charlie Becker to help set up Paddy McAteer’s 60-yard field goal to send it to overtime.

I Knew it Was Over When…

Drake Lindsey was sacked on fourth down in overtime.

What I Took Away From the Game

It was ugly, infuriating and Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti made some head scratching decisions in the fourth quarter. However, the Hoosiers pull off a Halloween treat in overtime.

In a year where there is not an elite team, Indiana just needs to keep winning games in any and all fashions. The Hoosier defense is elite and the offense may have found new life with Wilson at quarterback.

Let’s start with the quarterback situation, which seems to be a major theme for the 2026 college football season. Josh Hoover was knocked out of the game late in the second quarter after taking a late hit after an interception. Grant Wilson, who some discounted heading into the season as just an onfield coach, came in and performed well.

Indiana heads into a bye week needing to evaluate the position. While I do not have all the information on Hoover’s injury, the staff must use all available information during the bye to figure it out. Wilson is capable and experienced and if Hoover is not 100-percent healthy, Wilson has to start. Even if Hoover is healthy, Wilson may have earned a shot at the job too.

Outside of quarterback play, IU’s offense was fine. Yes, the offensive line had a few penalties, but they did put up 419 yards of offense. They ran the ball better, especially with Wilson in the game. The bye week should do wonders for the offense as well with Turbo Richard banged up and Khobie Martin easing his way back into the rotation.

IU’s defense took some lumps too with Rolijah Hardy missing the game and AJ Harris getting hurt late in the game. Harris and Hardy would be major blows to a unit that was playing its best ball of the year and will need to continue to carry the Hoosiers while the offense continues to sputter.

The bye week is coming at a great time as IU has a laundry list of issues to iron out before USC comes to town. However, the most important this was accomplished. IU won and could find themselves atop the Big Ten if Minnesota knocks off UCLA and Oregon can knock off Ohio State.

What’s Next

A much needed bye week before the USC Trojans come to town on November 14th.
