The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff is in its final two days! As Curt Cignetti and his staff prepare for their third season in Bloomington with championship aspirations once again at the forefront, Hoosier Huddle continues one of our favorite offseason traditions: the Countdown to Kickoff. Over the 100 days leading up to Indiana’s season opener, we’ll spotlight every player on the 2026 roster. Today, we turn our attention to a returning member along the secondary, Byron Baldwin.

Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland

Class/Position: Sophomore/Defensive Back

Byron Baldwin Jr. arrived in Bloomington as one of the most highly regarded recruits in his class, but earning meaningful snaps as a true freshman under Curt Cignetti is no small feat. Baldwin managed to do exactly that, appearing in eight games during his first season. He made his collegiate debut against UCLA, contributing on kickoff coverage before later seeing action on defense and recording three tackles. As the season progressed, he continued to make an impact on special teams, often the clearest indicator that a young player is gaining the trust of the coaching staff and positioning himself for a larger role.

That expanded opportunity should come this fall, with Baldwin projected to see significant time at rover in Bryant Haines’ aggressive defensive scheme. The position appears to fit his skill set well, allowing him to leverage his athleticism, range, and speed both in coverage and as a blitzer. Baldwin’s physical tools are impossible to miss when watching him play. The next step is pairing those traits with consistency and a deeper command of the defense. If that development continues, he has the potential to become a playmaker in Indiana’s defense this season. I’m looking forward to seeing how he grows into that role.
