Matchup To Watch: Indiana’s Defense vs. Tayven Jackson’s Homecoming

The reigning National Champion Indiana Hoosiers (isn’t that so cool to say?) begin their title-defending campaign against North Texas this Saturday and will see a very familiar face under center for the Mean Green. Tayven Jackson, the former starting/backup quarterback for the Hoosiers for two seasons and brother of standout Indiana basketball alum Trayce-Jackson Davis, returns to Bloomington for the first time since his transfer at the end of the 2024 season.

I expect Tayven to come into this game with his hair on fire, looking to prove Indiana wrong for going in a different direction at quarterback. He will play hard and look to play spoiler as Indiana goes for 17 straight wins. Opposite Jackson, of course, is the Indiana defense. Curt Cignetti, Bryant Haines, and their staff have turned this Indiana defense into the best in the country since their arrival in Bloomington. This season, however, is the first where there is truly a significant amount of turnover year over year, with several key leaders of the defense leaving the program for the NFL or due to graduation.

As such, there is a lot to learn in one offseason for these new Indiana arrivals to match or exceed the production that Indiana’s 2024 and 2025 defenses achieved. The bar is extremely high, the defensive schemes are very complex, and the timelines are short. Thus, if there is any game for Tayven to get his revenge, it is game one of the season while the Hoosiers may still be ironing out some kinks.

The Hoosiers under Curt Cignetti have also notoriously started slow in game one. In Cignetti’s debut game against Florida International, the Hoosiers won 31-7, but it was only a two-score game at halftime. The next year, against Old Dominion, the Hoosiers won 27-14 and held just a 17-7 lead at halftime. Some of this is by design, as the Hoosiers do not want to play any of their cards so early in the season and thus call the most basic plays in the playbook, but it does keep the door open just a tad for the opposition. If Tayven is on his game in this homecoming matchup, the Indiana defense will need to step up and shut him down before anything can materialize.

Now, do I believe anything crazy will happen in this game? No, I do not. Simply put. The Hoosiers are 40 point favorites and have a 99% chance to win this game per various analytical models. The Hoosiers should win comfortably and will leave no doubt that they are, once again, one of the best teams in the country. If North Texas puts up any sort of fight, however, it will need to be led by Tayven Jackson. It will be interesting to see how he’s progressed since leaving the Hoosiers and will be of the utmost importance that the Indiana defense shuts him down in order to seal win #1 for Indiana.
