Smith, Hoosiers Turn to Baylor Film to Prep For North Texas

Carter Smith spoke to the media ahead of the Hoosiers game against North Texas this Saturday. Smith is a pre-season All-American and a captain of this Hoosier team at the left tackle position. The fifth-year veteran of IU has been through all the ups and downs of the program, but now will look to help his team repeat as national champions.

He was asked specifically about the North Texas defensive line and how he is preparing for the blitzes that they will mix in.

“We’ll focus on the faces, but right now I think we’re just getting acclimated because their DC is coming from Baylor,” Smith said. “So we’re watching a lot of Baylor film right now and getting their scheme down before we get into more players”.

North Texas is bringing in a new coaching staff, and with it, 70 new players. This makes them a near-impossible scout job, but Indiana is becoming acclimated to their coaching staff’s tendencies. Smith is becoming familiar with North Texas’ defensive schemes and blitz patterns, so that he is ready come Saturday.

Smith was also asked about Bray Lynch and how he is performing at the center position.

“He’s been filling the gap really well,” Smith said. “I would say that from a gap to a gap, he’s been doing a great job. He’s very vocal, and he’s doing a great job staying in the playbook, understanding the scheme, and he makes good calls. He’s a very confident leader out there, and it’s something that we need”.

Lynch is a very talented and experienced offensive lineman. He will be a major player for IU this season, and it is clear that Smith has full confidence in him at the center position. His amount of college playing experience has prepared him for this moment.

Smith was asked about the Indiana defensive line and how challenging they have been to play against in practice.

“I mean those two K State guys, Chiddi and Tobi, really quick, really strong guys,” Smith said. “They’re both really tall and lean dudes. They do a great job rushing off the edge, and are very disruptive when they want to spike and ruin the gap-to-gap run.”

Smith praises the Kansas State edge rushers Chiddi Obiazor and Tobi Onsunsami for their size and athletic ability. These players both come in with strong college experience and are poised to be top edge rushers on this already dominant Indiana defensive line.

The North Texas game is now only four days away, and Smith was asked about his excitement for the game.

“Yeah, I’m so excited to hit another color other than red,” Smith said.

The Mean Green will indeed be another color from red. Indiana will play their first game since the national title, and it will be in front of a sold-out crowd.
