The memories of IU’s unprecedented and historic unbeaten run to the National Championship are still fresh in our minds but the work is just beginning for the 2026-2027 Indiana Hoosiers. As Curt Cignetti and his staff gear up for year number three in Bloomington and embark on a quest to become repeat champs, Hoosier Huddle’s Countdown to Kickoff rolls on! Thank goodness, we are now only five days away from the return of Indiana Hoosiers football!

No player has the exact same path to success. That is certainly true of Rolijah Hardy, a player that is now entrenched as a marquee member of one of the country’s best defenses but was a member of the Naval Academy Preparatory School just a few short years ago. Between then and now: Hardy was a late addition to Curt Cignetti’s first recruiting class in Bloomington, immediately flashed when given game time against Western Illinois as a freshman, worked his way into the starting lineup for a team that made the College Football Playoff and then started all 16 games for a team that went unbeaten. Hardy earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from the media and coaches for his outstanding play in 2025 and he returns to IU as a third-year player and a favorite to earn All-American status. Talk about a meteoric rise!
Rolijah Hardy is a native of Lakeland, Florida and he played for Winter Haven High School followed by Lakeland High School. Hardy was considered undersized and chose to spend the 2023 school year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Curt Cignetti liked what he saw and added him as a late addition to the 2024 recruiting class, his first at Indiana. He has proven to be a perfect fit in Bryant Haines’ defense and he’ll now partner with Isaiah “Bones” Jones as a locked-in starting linebacker.
If he stays healthy and decides not to leave early for the NFL, Hardy could emerge as an all-time great linebacker in Bloomington. He already has 20 starts and could eclipse 50 starts with multiple All-Big Ten seasons and (at least!) one National Championship. First things first though and that’s the 2026 campaign. Hardy is one of the defensive leaders for a unit expected to be among the nation’s elite and he should continue to be a tone-setting playmaker for Bryant Haines.
