Indiana Outlasts Butler 1–0 Despite 33 Shots

Indiana men’s soccer moved to 3–0 on the season Thursday night with a 1–0 win over Butler at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers controlled nearly every aspect of the match, outshooting the Bulldogs 33–2 and holding a 13–1 advantage in corner kicks, but needed a second-half set-piece goal from Nick McHenry to finally find the winner.

Indiana spent much of the first half with possession in Butler’s defensive end. The Hoosiers generated 19 shots, 10 shots on goal and nine corner kicks before halftime, while Butler recorded just one shot and did not test IU goalkeeper Michael Mroz.

Butler goalkeeper Brooks Boersma was the reason the match remained scoreless through 45 minutes. He made 10 first half saves and repeatedly denied Indiana’s attempts from Charlie Heuer, Stephane Njike, Easton Bogard, Oliver Moller-Jensen and Alex Barger.

Heuer nearly gave IU an early lead after the Hoosiers’ first corner in the fourth minute, when his shot from outside the box deflected off a Butler defender and hit the left post. Njike created danger down the sideline throughout the half, but Butler kept turning away crosses and rebounds in front of goal.

Moller-Jensen, entering the match after being named both Top Drawer Soccer’s National Player of the Week and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, was involved frequently but could not break through. He had multiple first half looks, including a point-blank chance in the 32nd minute, but Butler’s goalkeeper continued to keep the match even.

Indiana’s pressure continued after halftime. Butler created a brief scare when a shot hit the post in the 60th minute, but the Hoosiers answered two minutes later.

Alex Matthews delivered a well placed corner into the box in the 62nd minute, and McHenry finished the chance to put Indiana ahead 1–0. The goal came after Indiana had spent more than an hour creating chances without finding a way past Butler’s goalkeeper.

The Hoosiers continued to generate opportunities after taking the lead. Josh Maher hit the crossbar in the 67th minute, and IU created several more chances through Barger, Heuer, Moller-Jensen and Collins Oduro. A late goal by Dempsey Resich was called back for offside after a VAR review in the 88th minute.

Despite the narrow final score, IU’s defense remained strong. Butler finished with just two shots, neither of which were on target, as Indiana’s back line protected Mroz for the entire match. This victory gives the Hoosiers their second consecutive clean sheet and completes a 3–0 start to the season.

Game Takeaways

Indiana’s final third finishing is the biggest concern. The Hoosiers created enough opportunities to put the match away much earlier, but too many shots went wide, were blocked, or landed directly in Butler’s goalkeeper’s hands. IU put 15 shots on target but scored only once.

McHenry’s goal was crucial, but Matthews deserves significant credit for the delivery from the corner. Set pieces finally provided the mush needed breakthrough after open play chances continuously fell short.

IU’s defensive form is real, continuing the trend from the Evansville win. Butler rarely threatened and did not register a shot on target. The only genuine Butler danger came when its 60^th minute attempt hit the post.

Njike’s return added an immediate attacking dimension. He consistently beat defenders down the sideline and created several early opportunities. Oduro also showed pace after coming on, even though neither player could finish a chance.

Moller-Jensen remained involved despite an unusually quiet night on the scoresheet. He had eleven shots and helped create several attacking sequences, but Butler kept him out of the net after his three goals and two assists in IU’s first two matches.

Indiana wills travel to Louisville, Kentucky, for a Monday night matchup against Louisville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST on August 31, as the Hoosiers look to carry their 3–0 start and second straight clean sheet into their first road test of the season.
