A linebacker room often defines the productivity that a team will have in any given season. Linebackers set the tone for the defense. They ensure players know the call, are aligned correctly, communicate pre-snap adjustments, and check into new coverages when motion occurs.
In football, every position must work intrinsically together to find success, and every great team has included a phenomenal defense at every level of football. The Indiana Hoosiers proved this fact during their historic National Championship run in the 2025-26 season. Sure, players like Fernando Mendoza, Omar Cooper Jr., and Kaelon Black propelled Indiana forward and put points on the board. However, Indiana’s defense completely dismantled opponents, leaving teams in scoring droughts, with missed opportunities, and forced errors.
The defense led by Coach Bryant Haines finished the year as the No. 2 scoring defense in the nation, holding teams to just 11.7 points per game, proving that if teams do not score, they cannot win. Across 16 games, the Hoosiers held teams to 77.2 rushing yards per game, which translates to around 3.0 yards per carry.
The linebacker room was dominant, led by then-senior Aiden Fisher, who completed the season with 46 solo tackles, 51 assists, 10.5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and 4.5 sacks. Fisher’s elite performance punched him a ticket to the Houston Texans in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Hoosiers will be looking to fill his shoes for the 2026-27 season, but a few veteran players have proven to be the perfect men for the job.
One cannot look at a perfect 16-0 season without noting the Hoosiers who stood on the defensive side of the ball, the ones who held a storied Alabama football team to just three points in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal, marking the largest margin of defeat in any game since 1998 for the Crimson Tide.
Coach Haines did not go to the transfer portal for linebackers; rather, the group consists of Indiana veterans and underclassmen; however, much of the foundation remains the same; it is just a matter of building on what they already know.
The Starters – LB
Isaiah Jones– Redshirt Senior/London, OH
Jones arrived in Bloomington for his freshman season in 2022, and the linebacker from London, Ohio, has remained a Hoosier ever since. Out of high school, Jones was a three-star prospect according to 247Sports and ranked at No. 56 nationally at the linebacker position. In his redshirt junior season in 2025, Jones had a breakout year, appearing in all 16 games with 7 starts. He recorded his first solo sack in the third quarter against Old Dominion. In September, Illinois was held to just 2 yards rushing, and Jones was part of that defense. He accumulated 38 solo tackles and 40 assists for a combined total of 78. Jones recorded and ranked second on the team in tackles for loss at 15.5, as well as sacks with 7.
His 2025 campaign introduced a player with an elite ability to stop the run, as well as someone willing to get off the edge and shut down the quarterback. His performance earned him third-team All-Big Ten from the conference media and honorable mention honors from the coaches panel. Furthermore, Jones’s impact stretches far beyond the field. As a veteran Hoosier, he has been a consistent leader in the locker room, weight room, and practices. He knows what is expected from the linebacker room as well as from Haines. As a middle linebacker, Jones’s communication will be key, as he will most likely become the play caller in the field for the defense.
Through coaching changes, Jones has seen every facet of Indiana Football, and it is clear that Coach Cignetti was the perfect fit for the young linebacker. Jones’s production speaks for itself, but beyond that, this is a relentless player; one who stuck around when players around him entered the transfer portal. He has seen Indiana Football through, and now he steps into a larger role, and one that he is fully capable of filling.
Rolijah Hardy- Junior/ Lakeland, Fla.
Rolijah Hardy will likely complete the Hoosiers’ 4-2-5 defense. Hardy continues to defy all expectations; as a zero-star recruit, he has rewritten the script, leading Indiana in tackles and sacks in the 2025 season. Hardy is also a veteran player and brings experience and a high ceiling to his 2026 campaign. Hardy committed to Indiana on May 16, 2024, with zero other FBS offers to show for it. But as we all know, Cignetti never constructs a roster based on what a paper says, and Haines believed fully in what Hardy could become. Hardy was one of the few true freshmen to appear in all 13 games in the 2024 season.
In his sophomore season in 2025, Hardy fell into a dominant role on the defensive side of the ball. During the National Championship year, Hardy started in all 16 games and recorded 48 solo tackles and 54 assists, for a combined total of 102 tackles. He tallied 15.0 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and five pass breakups. His performance earned him second-team All-Big Ten from the conference media and coaches panels. Hardy has proven to be a finds ball carriers through traffic and continuously chases down opponents. His 2025 season proved that he is a productive playmaker, and with everything to prove, there is no doubt that he will make a difference in his 2026 campaign.
Rotational Depth Pieces- LB
Kaiden Turner – Redshirt Senior/ Fayetteville, AR
Kaiden Turner will likely serve as an experienced third man up for this group. He will also share time with Jones and Hardy on the field in certain schemes. In his final year of eligibility, Turner brings experience and comfort to Haines’s defense. After spending a few years learning and shadowing Fishers and Jones, Turner will be able to plug that knowledge into action come game time. Turner appeared in 13 games with one start last season. He accumulated 10 total tackles and one interception.
Jeff Utzinger- Redshirt Senior/ Carmel, Ind.
Jeff Utzinger is another success story waiting to be written. He joined the Hoosiers in the fall of 2022 as a walk-on, and ever since then, he has earned his spot. Being a walk-on is never easy; it requires perseverance, observation, and quiet work. The 2026 season will arrive with more opportunities than ever for the redshirt senior. Over the past two seasons, Utzinger has been a recognizable face on special teams, appearing in every game over that time frame. In the 2025 offseason, Utzinger earned a scholarship, one built on commitment and trust. Utzinger will likely take on a more prominent role at the linebacker position this season, but will also be a dominant force on special teams.
PJ Nelson- Redshirt Freshman/ Cincinnati, OH
PJ Nelson is a three-star recruit according to 247Sports and was a top 50 linebacker nationally according to ESPN and Rivals. While at Princeton High School, Nelson recorded 137 tackles, 24.0 tackles for loss, and 8.0 sacks as a senior. His first year at Indiana came in 2025, when he appeared in two games. Nelson will likely fill in at the WILL linebacker position. He has an eye for the ball and shoots the gap, often dismantling the quarterback; he also uses his speed to play sideline to sideline.
Ja’Dyn Williams – True Freshman/ Massillon, OH
Ja’Dyn Williams will be a completely new face to collegiate football. The true freshman out of Massillon, Ohio, is listed as a four-star prospect by 247Sports and the 11th-ranked player in Ohio. Williams chose Indiana over an offer from Ohio State. Williams is an exciting newcomer to look out for and could find himself on the field early. Williams is also a speedy sideline-to-sideline player and should develop nicely under the direction of Haines.
Henry Ohlinger- True Freshmen/ Columbus, OH
Henry Ohlinger is another name to watch. Ohlinger is a four-star prospect according to ESPN, and 247Sports ranks him at No. 119 nationally. Ohlinger was a two-time Ohio High School Athletic Association Division VI All-Ohio selection. As a junior, he recorded 17 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and two interceptions. He also found reps on offense with 27 touchdowns and 1,582 yards rushing. He also posted an impressive seven 100-yard rushing games as a junior. It is clear that Ohlinger is an overall athlete and will use his speed and versatility to earn some reps as a true freshman.
Jacob Savage- True Freshmen/ Union, Ky
Jacob Savage was rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports coming out of high school. He was ranked as the No.5 prospect in Kentucky. Savage was dominant in his high school years and brought Ryle High School to back-to-back Kentucky High School Athletic Association state final four appearances. He was awarded the Paul Hornung Award as the top high school football player in Kentucky as a senior. Savage left Union, Ky. with a program record of 511 tackles. He tallied 39 career tackles for loss. Similar to Ohlinger, Savage brings versatility to the linebacker position, as he was also an offensive weapon. He completed his career with 3,584 all-purpose yards and 65 touchdowns. He rushed for 2,835 yards and recorded 749 yards as a receiver. Savage’s time at Ryle was nothing short of impactful, and that will surely carry over to the Hoosiers. Savage could likely make an impact on special teams this year.
Amari Kamara- Redshirt Freshman/ Ashburn, Va.
Kamara did not see any action in his freshman season in 2025 and decided to redshirt. As a senior at Stone Bridge High School, Kamara tallied 104 stops and 2 sacks. He was also named to the second team all-district as a senior.
Kaden McConnell- Redshirt Sophomore/ Greenwood, Ind.
McConnell joined the Hoosiers in the fall of 2024 as a walk-on freshman. He didn’t see any game action in his freshman season and redshirted. In 2025, he made his collegiate debut against Michigan State on special teams. McConnell also earned Academic All-Big Ten in the 2025 season.
Clayton Allen- Redshirt Junior/ Fishers, Ind.
Allen did not see the field in his 2023 freshman season and redshirted the season. Similar to McConnell, he joined the Hoosiers as a walk-on. Allen has yet to see the field, but he has earned Academic All-Big Ten for two consecutive seasons. As a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, McConnell logged 103 career tackles and one interception.
Final Assessment
In light of Aiden Fisher’s absence, the Hoosier linebacker room is seeking to fill in the gaps that Fisher left behind, physically, mentally, and emotionally. However, there is a significant amount of experience within the likes of Isaiah Jones, Rolijah Hardy, and Kaiden Turner. They have spent consecutive years learning from Haines’ scheme and playcalling. Each player made a tremendous impact during the Hoosiers’ National Championship year, and with no new transfers, it is clear that this coaching staff believes in them too.
The 2025 season featured strong depth pieces, with Fishers leading the way, followed by Jones, Hardy, and Turner. They marked a pretty solid lineup, especially if one player went down and needed a filler. This season will look a little different from that front. Although Jones, Hardy, and Turner are strong players, the depth pieces consist of true freshmen and redshirt freshmen, not including Jeff Utzinger. They naturally lack experience at the Power 4 level, but that can quickly change in this kind of lineup. This is not a bad thing; in fact, it just means that there is tremendous growth to be had for these young players.
This will be a season of development for them, and many will probably see field action. Every year, teams change, and position groups look different; it is only natural, and it requires a willingness to adjust. This will likely be a season of adjustment for the linebackers, but a group led by veterans such as Jones, Hardy, and Turner will find success and impact the game in more ways than one. After all, every season is an opportunity, and this marks exactly that.
