Countdown to 2026 Indiana Football 58 Days – Lavar Keys

We slowly inch closer to Indiana kicking off against North Texas in the Hoosiers’ season opener on September 5th. As we run our countdown each day at Hoosier Huddle, we now line up at day 58, where we highlight Lavar Keys.

Hometown: Hyattsville, Maryland

High School: DeMatha

Class: Freshman

Position: Wide Receiver

Lavar Keys arrives in Bloomington as a true freshman rated as the 831st player in his recruiting class, putting him at a 3-star rated recruit (all per 247 Sports Composite Rankings). Originally, Keys committed to Penn State with James Franklin at the helm. However, after Franklin’s firing, his recruitment re-opened. Keys then opted to commit to the reigning national champion Indiana Hoosiers as IU’s recruiting team kept a strong relationship with Keys throughout the entire recruitment process. In TJ’s article, Keys shared with Hoosier Huddle how excited he is to be part of Shanahan’s offense: “It made me wonder what I can do in the offense and they showed how electric they are. That’s the type of scheme I would like to be a part of.” I am sure coach Shanahan is excited to have Keys as well. Keys’ size will likely push him inside into the slot, which is a prime area for him to thrive in this offense. Keys reminds me of Whop Philyor, but faster and more of a deep threat as well. Keys has potential to be a true playmaker in this offense and serves as a dynamic threat in the passing game.

The wide receiver room is crowded with talent in 2026, but Keys should get some time nonetheless. However, Keys will likely spend most of 2026 honing his craft, working hard in the gym every day, and making the most of the reps he receives. With hard work and learning from the talent next to him each day, Keys could truly be a breakout star in 2027.
