Charlie Becker’s breakout season seemed like it came out of nowhere, but if you follow our site and the team, you knew he was lurking, just waiting for his chance.

Becker was one of the final pieces recruited to IU by Tom Allen and retained by Curt Cignetti. He was a football and track star at Father Ryan and those skills are evident on Big Ten fields every Saturday now.

As a true freshman, Becker played in all 13 games in 2024 and became a special teams ace. His path to more playing time is a pattern that other players will follow.

“I think special teams is super, super important. In football, it’s one of the three teams, and I think just trying to make sure you do your job correctly on special teams allows you to gain trust in the coaches. After you gain trust, they’re going to put you on the field, in your position, defense or offense. And you just have to continue to build that trust.” Becker said this spring.

That trust paid off in 2025 as Becker became one of the stars of the second half of the season and playoff run for the Hoosiers.

Becker started seeing the field more on offense when Elijah Sarratt left the Maryland game early with an injury. After that, Becker stepped into big roles as other Hoosiers were banged up toward the end of the year.

Over IU’s first eight games, Becker made just six catches. In the Hoosiers’ final eight games, he made 28 for 574 yards and three touchdowns. He finished with 34 catches for 679 yards and four scores.

The expectations for Becker are sky-high as several outlets have him going as a first-round pick in their 2027 mock NFL Drafts. He missed most of spring practice dealing with a hamstring issue, but he should be written in permanent ink into the starting lineup.

The countdown continues each day on Hoosier Huddle until IU kicks off the 2026 season against the North Texas Mean Green!
