It’s June now, a time that often signifies the beginning of summer. But for many Indiana fans, the meaning runs deeper; it confirms that we are one month closer to college football season. Each morning, Hoosier fans wake up a little happier, knowing that Saturdays in the fall are just around the corner. And in the locker room, under Memorial Stadium, one player seeks to prove himself and to take on the stage that was never guaranteed. The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff continues, and today, wide receiver Bruno Massel IV takes center stage.

Participating in collegiate athletics is difficult for anyone; every day is a test, and every morning begins with the will to get up. Some days are better than others, but everyone is chasing a dream and a chance. Last fall, Bruno Massel IV stepped onto Bloomington’s campus and became a walk-on for the Hoosiers. Belief brought him here, and for him, every moment is earned and fought for. The redshirt freshman was rarely spotted on gamedays last fall and did not see field action, but he was always there, in the weight room, at practice, and in the locker room, silently going about business.
The 5-foot-11 wide receiver is from Elmhurst, Ill., where he attended York Community High School. While in high school, Massel excelled at the quarterback position. He was in the pocket, finding his receivers, and extending the play. In his junior season, Massel was the backup quarterback, and while juniors around him were committing to big schools, Massel was left on the sidelines, waiting for his chance to compete.
His opportunity came in his senior year when he was given the starting position at York. In his single season, he threw for 1,685 yards for 11 touchdowns and rushed for 1,248 yards and 18 touchdowns. From these statistics, it is no secret that Massel reverts to his legs, and his success as a track and field athlete turned him into a dangerous dual-threat quarterback. Masell also brought York to its lone Illinois High School Association state finale.
During his time as quarterback, Massel stayed on his feet through contact. He displayed strong vision and could read gaps well. His smaller frame allows him to weave past defenders, and his change-of-direction skills leave them grabbing for air. Indiana coaches noticed his skill on his feet and immediately converted him to a wide receiver. As a former quarterback, Massel has a strong advantage: he can dissect coverages, find passing windows, and anticipate the timing of a throw. He has proven he can find another gear when it comes to pure speed, and as a receiver, he can stretch the defense vertically, open up the middle, and create opportunities for the rest of the offense.
Bruno Massel IV’s journey began many years ago, and it continues as he fights for every spot, every moment, and every play. In college athletics, nothing is guaranteed, and for reigning National Champions, everything is earned, and Massel will seek to do just that in hopes that soon, his name will be heard across Memorial Stadium.
