Countdown to 2026 Indiana Football: 95 Days Tyrique Tucker

Indiana Tucker

The memories of Indiana’s unprecedented and historic unbeaten run to the National Championship are still fresh in our minds but the work is just beginning for the 2026-2027 Indiana Hoosiers. As Curt Cignetti and his staff gear up for year number three in Bloomington and embark on a quest to become repeat champs, Hoosier Huddle begins the annual Countdown to Kickoff!

Class/Position: Redshirt Senior/Defensive Line

Many contributing factors helped the Indiana Hoosiers go from one of the worst power conference programs in the country to the College Football Playoff and then from the College Football Playoff to a 16-0 juggernaut that won the National Championship. Among the biggest changes has been the remarkable play of the defensive line under position coach Pat Kuntz. After struggling for years to hold up against physical offenses, Indiana’s defensive line has been a brick wall under Curt Cignetti and Pat Kuntz. One of the stars from last season’s defensive line returns for his senior year and he is the focus of today’s countdown feature: Tyrique Tucker.

Tyrique Tucker was a moderately-rated prospect in Norfolk, Virginia, who was recruited to James Madison by Curt Cignetti and his staff. Tucker did not play in 2022 and then was a part-time starter in 2023 as a redshirt freshman for the Dukes. Tucker was not part of the early wave of James Madison players that followed Curt Cignetti to Indiana University before the 2024 season, but he flocked to Bloomington as one of the final additions to the portal class. Despite being an afterthought before the campaign, Tyrique Tucker immediately stood out as a stout run-stopper and space eater in the middle of the defensive line.

Tucker was graded by Pro Football Focus as the number nine interior defensive lineman in all of the Big Ten as IU’s run defense improved dramatically. Despite losing a few valuable linemen, Indiana’s defensive line took another step forward in 2025. The Hoosiers had one of the best run defenses in the country and Tyrique Tucker was a huge reason why. The 300-pounder was a consistent force all season, starting all 16 games and earning All-America honors (3rd team Associated Press, 1st team On3, 2nd team The Athletic). Tucker finished with 40 tackles (first among DL) and 12 tackles for loss (2nd among DL) as IU allowed only 2.99 yards per carry to opponents.

Tyrique Tucker could have headed to the NFL Draft but he quickly opted to return to Bloomington for his redshirt season and immediately gets written in permanent marker as a starter in the middle of the defense. The line is expected to, once again, be one of the best in the country as Tucker is joined by returnees like Mario Landino, Daniel Ndukwe and a host of redshirt freshmen that could be ready to contribute. In addition, the Hoosiers added interior forces like Joe Hjelle and edge players like Tobi Usunsanmi, Josh Burnham and Chiddi Obiazor.

Tyrique Tucker is a steady and often dominant force in the middle of one of college football’s best defensive lines and he’s a big (in more ways than one) reason opposing offenses are not looking forward to any matchup against the Hoosiers.

The countdown continues each day on Hoosier Huddle until IU kicks off the 2026 season against the North Texas Mean Green!
