We slowly inch closer to Indiana kicking off against North Texas in the Hoosiers’ season opener on September 5th. As we run our countdown each day at Hoosier Huddle, we now line up at day 98, where we highlight incoming freshman defensive lineman Cam McHaney.
2026 Countdown to Kickoff: #98 – Cam McHaney
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 286 lbs
Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana
High School: IMG Academy
Class: Freshman
Position: Defensive Lineman

Cam McHaney arrives in Bloomington as a true freshman after a very successful high school campaign at both Indianapolis Lutheran High School and then IMG Academy. He is rated as a 4-star recruit per 247 Sports Composite Rankings and is ranked as the 398th best overall player in his class.
Despite playing in Florida with IMG Academy, it seems McHaney was interested in returning to his home region of the Midwest (no inside information here, just inferring), as nearly every school that offered McHaney was located in the region. Indiana won the race, of course, as the Indianapolis native returns home to be a Hoosier, but there was competition from other high-profile schools as well.
McHaney received offers from Vanderbilt, Purdue, Cincinnati, Illinois, Louisville, Wake Forest, and many Group of 5 schools as well. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and was the best discus thrower in the state of Indiana during his sophomore year. Needless to say, McHaney is a gifted athlete. Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports was able to scout McHaney in 2025, noting:
“Quick-twitched ball of fire that can penetrate gaps and creative negative plays. Tips the scales right around 6-foot-1, 315 pounds and wears the mass well with a wide lower half. Naturally low center of gravity allows him to get up and underneath opponents while raw power helps him move blockers off the ball. Might have some limitations with his range as he’s at his best charging forward, but understands how to cave run lanes once engaged. Owns one of the fastest verified 40-yard dash times for any interior defensive lineman in the class of 2026, which authenticates his explosive take-offs. Projects best as a 3-technique in an even front that can help tax protection. Might not be an every-down defender initially, but has multi-year starter upside and has drawn glowing reviews from the staff at IMG Academy.”
A “quick-twitched ball of fire that owns one of the fastest verified 40-yard dash times in his entire class for his position” is coming to Indiana. If that’s not enough to get you excited, I am not sure what will. McHaney has the potential and ceiling to be a truly impactful player for the Hoosiers for years to come. He is certainly one to watch moving forward.
