Indiana won the national title game in 2025, and now the 2026 team needs to separate itself from the 2025 team. The Hoosiers’ defense was the catalyst for their 2025 success, but now, they need to prove themselves once again.
There are a lot of questions about whether this defense can live up to Curt Cignetti’s standard, and the spring game is the time to show off what they can do.
Defensive Pressure
The Defensive line presented itself as a dominant force all game. Indiana’s offense was down several key starters, but the defense took advantage. They were relentless in rushing the passer while also forming a wall against any Indiana run game. Mario Landino, junior defensive lineman, got an early sack for Indiana and set the tone for the whole night.
The two Kansas State defensive line transfers, Tobi Osunsanmi and Chiddi Obiazor, looked large out there on the field. They felt like athlete that can be game changers for Indiana.
Indiana’s defensive coordinator, Bryant Haines, did a great job at mixing in creative blitzes, utilizing both linebackers and defensive backs. Byron Baldwin Jr., sophomore defensive back, was sent on two blitzes and was effective in disrupting the quarterback both times. The Hoosier defense really succeeded when they
Haines called a lot more blitzes than ordinary in a spring game, and it is an indicator of a different defensive approach this season.
Indiana’s defensive tackles had a running wall that presented several struggles for Indiana’s offense. Joe Hjelle, in particular, stood out as a key depth piece to this Indiana defense. Good teams are built in the trenches, so it is important to see Indiana showing depth in the defensive trenches.

Defensive Backs
The defensive backs are the position with the most questions on this defense. In this game, several players stood out and answered these questions.
Bryant Haines asks his defensive backs to be very versatile, and they showed off that skill. Haines asks them to be able to play every secondary position, and for large parts of the game, they showed promise with that.
One player who stood out to me was Byron Baldwin Jr. He looked very comfortable on the field tonight. Rolijah Hardy also seemed like he would be a coach’s favorite this season, as Haines can fully trust him.
The secondary did have some major struggles when it came to communication. The biggest of these struggles was shown when the coverage broke apart as Tyler Morris claimed a 75-yard touchdown. Jaylen Bell was asked to guard Nick Marsh for a large part of the game and failed at the task. He gave up two catches while also committing two penalties when defending the transfer receiver.
Linebackers
Isaiah Jones looked poised as the mike linebacker. He was collected when calling the shots for the defense, and it showed. Jacob Savage had a stand-out shoestring tackle that prevented a touchdown. He stood out as a good depth piece to this core that lost its captain, Aiden Fisher, from last season.
Key Takeaways
Indiana was successfully able to prove that this defense can indeed be better than last year’s team. They had some woes throughout the game, but when they were on key, it was hard for Indiana’s offense to create anything.
The NFL draft coincided with this year’s spring game, and it held a heavy shadow over the game. The fans celebrated as Fernando Mendoza went first in this year’s draft. The shadow from last year’s team loomed large in this game, but the team seemed poised to forget about 2025. The goal is not to be better than last year’s team, but rather to be the best that this year’s team can be. The defense played fearlessly, and it showed.
