The Indiana Hoosiers (16-5, 0-1) dropped their home opener 2-0 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on a beautiful spring day at Andy Mohr Field (518) in Bloomington. The Hoosiers managed just two hits off Gopher pitcher Sydney Schwartz who did it all.
Schawartz and Indiana starter Brooke Mannon were in a pitching duel until the top of the fifth inning. Mannon threw four scoreless innings before Taylor Hess took over in the circle for the final three innings.
Hess was greeted rudely by Schwartz who broke the tie with a home run to left field on a 2-2 pitch to lead off the inning. Schwartz struck again on offense with a single off Hess to lead off the top of the seventh. Jae Cosgriff pinch ran and scored later on a throwing error from Ellie Goings.
Hoosiers head coach Shonda Stanton gave credit to Schwartz who threw a complete game shutout with six strike outs and faced 24 total batters.
Stanton said postgame that Schwartz was able to keep IU off balance by changing speeds on her pitches. She also alluded to IU’s lack of plate discipline by saying the Hoosiers need to swing at strikes.
The Hoosiers best scoring opportunity came in the second inning when Madalyn Strader singled and stole second before Alli Gavin was hit by a pitch. Nothing came of the two-out rally as Peyton Drummond grounded out.
The Hoosiers will take on Minnesota again on Saturday. However, first pitch has been pushed back to 4pm due to weather. The game will be broadcast on BTN+.
