Cream & Crimson Computations: Stuffed with IU Numbers After Win Over KSU

Three weeks into the season, in the midst of Feast Week, and fresh off the Hoosiers’ second power four win this season, I’m back with another refresh of Indiana basketball statistics. Welcome, Modern Basketball After entering the AP Poll at #25 this past week, Indiana welcomed Kansas State into Assembly Hall and led from start to finish in an 86-69 victory in which they notched their second Power Four conference win in the Darian DeVries tenure. There are a number of things that stood out to me in this game, but one thing did especially: look at this shot chart after the victory. The one mid-range shot taken came after a Tucker DeVries offensive rebound, in which he turned and sunk a push-shot floater. Indiana is playing modern, fluid offensive basketball and came away with a 17-point win after not even their best 3-point shooting performance. Entirely different basketball being played than in the Mike Woodson tenure. The shot chart from his final game as the head coach last season is shown below. Enright Factor Kansas State’s PJ Haggerty came into the game leading the nation in points per game, averaging 28 a night. Darian DeVries tasked Conor Enright with slowing him down, and he delivered. When guarded by Enright, Haggerty was limited to 2-of-5 from the field and 4 points with 5 turnovers. Tayton Conerway had this to say about Enright’s performance: “He’s my favorite player to play with…he was looking forward to this [PJ Haggerty] matchup for the last three days. He kept saying he wanted all the smoke.” Rebounding Margin Rebounding has been an issue for the Hoosiers early into this season - when you’re playing small ball and spacing the floor with shooters on the offensive side of the floor, it’s probably always going to be a bit of a nagging issue. Indiana was able to outrebound Kansas State 35-28, however, and their rebounding statistics are improving slightly on the season, as shown below. Via: @CBBAnalytics Lock Down Defense The second, and arguably most important, thing that stood out to me about Indiana’s performance against Kansas State was the impressive performance not on the offensive side of the floor, but on defense. Kansas State came into the game having scored 84+ in each of their first six games. Despite this, the Hoosier defense was able to consistently force the Wildcats into difficult shots and run the team off of the three point line. Through Tuesday’s action, the Hoosiers vaulted into the 15th ranked spot on KenPom’s defensive efficiency rating (38th in offense, 19th overall). Despite the lack of a dominant big man presence down low and some nagging injuries keeping this team from full strength, DeVries has the team bought in on the defensive side of the floor.
