Indiana basketball looks bright for more than first-year IUMBB head coach Darian DeVries. Longtime IUWBB coach Teri Moren has her group trending upward as well. While Moren’s Hoosiers are still ironing out foul issues, their energy jumps off the floor. They stay aggressive on both ends, and Tuesday afternoon in Fort Myers was no exception.
Moren and the team traveled to Florida Gulf Coast and put on an outright clinic. It marked the second time this season they cleared 80 points, and they posted their highest scoring game of the year with an 82-64 win over the Eagles. Indiana struck first with an early lead, but foul trouble and turnovers let FGCU swing the momentum and take a 16-13 advantage.
The Hoosiers didn’t let that last long. Senior guard Shay Ciezki and redshirt sophomore Lenée Beaumont took control and never let go. In the second quarter alone, the duo poured in 15 of Indiana’s 21 points. They carried that spark into the third, where they completely overwhelmed the Eagles and pushed the lead to 24 entering the fourth. By the end of the night, Ciezki and Beaumont had combined for a staggering 49 points.
Ciezki was electric in her 28 minutes. She dropped 26 points on 9-for-15 shooting, knocked down four of her six attempts from deep, and added two steals for good measure. Forward Zania Socka-Nguemen anchored the defense yet again, pulling in seven of Indiana’s 29 rebounds and adding nine points before exiting with four fouls. Freshman guard Nevaeh Caffey also continues to impress. Her energy has been undeniable from day one, and she added three assists, a steal, and a block in another assertive outing. Her ceiling rises every game.
No player has surged forward more than Beaumont. Coming off injury rehab and a slower start than Moren expected, she has completely flipped the switch. Beau has become an outright problem for opponents, and her confidence is only growing. She finished with 23 points (tied for her career high) on 9-for-12 shooting and went a perfect five-for-five from beyond the arc. Earlier this season, Moren challenged her young players to mature, play together, and stop holding back. Beaumont took that to heart and hasn’t let up. Since IU’s rough night against Marshall on November 11, she has averaged 22.3 points on 69.7 percent shooting in her last three games. For comparison, she averaged just eight points on 45.5 percent shooting in her first three. And after opening the season 0-for-7 from deep, she has caught absolute fire, hitting 12 of her last 13 threes.
Indiana’s chemistry is growing fast, and the Hoosiers are likely to start earning AP Top 25 consideration soon. For now, they head back to Bloomington for a short break before hosting Gonzaga this Black Friday at 1:30 p.m. EST. If they can clean up the fouls, they should be in position for another strong afternoon in Assembly Hall.
