Arguably the biggest transfer portal win for the Hoosiers this offseason, Tayton Conerway arrives in Bloomington after a wildly successful stint at Troy University. Last season at Troy, Conerway accomplished almost everything you could accomplish in a given season. Per iuhoosiers.com, he won the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, made the All-Sun Belt Conference First Team, won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award, made the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team, and posted a program record 98 steals over the 2025 season, which was also good for 3rd overall in the entire country.
Conerway is an all-around star who, I believe, will take Bloomington by storm and lead the Hoosiers with guard play that Indiana hasn’t seen in years. Head Coach Darian DeVries prides himself on creating a team culture centered around fast pace, high energy, and high intensity. Conerway brings exactly that. While he isn’t the greatest three point shooter on the team, that is likely not his role. He will be surrounded by shooters and will be able to use, per Barttorvik, his 20th best assist rate in the country to the Hoosiers’ advantage.
He is also a menace on defense, as described above by ranking 3rd in the country in steals, which equated to roughly 3 steals per game. Per game! Conerway will be able to lock up nearly every guard in the Big Ten, freeing up the Hoosiers to game plan elsewhere on the court – similar to what D’Angelo Ponds brings to the Indiana football team.
Look for Conerway to make an instant impact this season and serve as one of the chief team leaders. If the Hoosiers reach high levels of success this season, Conerway will no doubt be a main reason why.
The Hoosiers are set to open the regular season at Assembly Hall on November 5th against Alabama A&M. Stay locked in with Hoosiers Huddle for all things Indiana Basketball, Indiana Football, and all other Indiana sports – all the time.
