Bonded in the Backfield: How Kaelon Black and Hemby Keep Indiana Rolling

Indiana’s backfield duo of Kaelon Black and Roman Hemby has become a driving force behind the Hoosiers’ high-powered offense. On and off the field, their chemistry fuels a rushing attack that ranks among the nation’s best—and could carry Indiana to another undefeated season.

Indiana’s offense has been nothing short of electric in 2025. The Hoosiers have converted 57 of 98 third downs, leading the nation in third-down conversion percentage (.582). They’re also tied with North Texas for the most first downs in the country (214). While quarterback Fernando Mendoza and the passing attack often headline the highlights, Indiana’s backfield has quietly powered much of that success.

Among Power Four programs, the Hoosiers rank fourth in total rushing yards (1,844) and average an impressive 230.5 yards per game. Their balanced offense has forced defenses to respect both the air and ground games, a dual threat that keeps opponents guessing.

Running back Kaelon Black said Tuesday that the offense’s consistency comes down to more than just talent—it’s about connection and commitment.

“Honestly, it’s so fun, man,” Black said with a grin. “It all starts in practice. The guys that we have and the camaraderie that we have as a team, like I said, being very detail oriented, being very focused in practice, and it translates to the game.”

What’s not to love when your team is averaging 45.4 points per game? Kaelon has been a driving force behind Indiana’s explosive offense, rushing for 509 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. Known for his physical running style and relentless work ethic, Black credits his coaches and offensive line for putting him in position to thrive.

Sharing the backfield with Roman Hemby has only made the experience better. The two have developed strong chemistry both on and off the field.“It’s fun. We do things outside of football, whether that’s playing video games, or just chatting on the phone,” Black said of his bond with Hemby. “It’s been very fun to be a part of it with him and he’s a great guy to [have] in the running back room.”

Together, the duo has become one of the Big Ten’s most dangerous rushing tandems, combining for over 1,000 yards on the ground. Hemby has been equally impressive, tallying 513 rushing yards, four touchdowns, and 131 receiving yards on 10 catches. When they’re not grinding through defenses, the two often unwind by gaming or occasionally hanging out with former Hoosier and current offensive quality control coach Justice Ellison.

Now, as Indiana prepares for a road matchup against Maryland on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 3:30 p.m. (EST), Hemby is preparing to face off against his former team. He spent four seasons with the Terrapins, where he racked up 2,347 rushing yards, 921 receiving yards, and 27 total touchdowns. Just last year, he gashed Indiana for 117 yards and a score on only ten carries.

When these teams last met in 2024, the Hoosiers managed 151 rushing yards. This season, they’re averaging nearly 70 more per game, a testament to how far the ground game has come. With Black and Hemby leading the charge, Indiana’s backfield will look to keep rolling—and push the Hoosiers to 9-0 for the second straight season.
