Business Trip to Eugene: No. 7 Hoosiers Ready to Challenge the No. 3 Ducks

Coming off a bye week and climbing to No. 7 in the rankings, Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers are locked in for their Top-10 showdown against No. 3 Oregon. With confidence, composure, and momentum, Indiana looks to shock Autzen Stadium and end the Ducks’ 18-game home streak.

Even with a bye week on the schedule, chaos reigned across college football in Week 6 — a reminder that anything can happen on any given Saturday. As the dust settles, Indiana rises to No. 7 in both the AP and Coaches Polls, setting up a marquee Top-10 showdown in Eugene against the No. 3 Oregon Ducks.

Head Coach Curt Cignetti made it clear during his Monday press conference that he holds Oregon — and its leader — in high regard.

Coach (Dan) Lanning has done a tremendous job recruiting, development, attention,” Cignetti said. “Probably one of the most impressive young coaching phenoms to come around in a while I would say, having been in this game for a little bit. They’re a great football team. Looking forward to the challenge. Confidence in our team.”

Since taking over in 2022, Lanning has built Oregon into a powerhouse. The Ducks are 40–6 under his leadership, with two bowl victories and a Big Ten title in 2024 to show for it. His success speaks for itself — a blend of elite recruiting, sharp game planning, and a roster loaded with playmakers ready to test Indiana’s rise.

Cignetti knows exactly what’s waiting for Indiana in Eugene — a powerhouse opponent and one of the most hostile environments in college football. But the second-year Hoosier head coach isn’t backing down. He embraces the challenge and believes his team is built to rise to the moment.

Like Indiana, Oregon is coming off a bye week, giving both programs time to reset and refocus. Cignetti ensured the Hoosiers balanced preparation and recovery — fine-tuning their game plan while allowing players to recharge before one of their biggest tests of the season.

Autzen Stadium is notorious for its deafening noise, a wall of sound that can shake even the most composed teams. But Indiana has already proven it can handle the chaos. Just two weeks ago, the Hoosiers silenced a sold-out crowd at Kinnick Stadium, taking down Iowa in one of their toughest road environments so far.

“I think anytime you do something the second time, it helps that you’ve been through it one time before,” Cignetti said of that experience. “Iowa was a sellout. It was loud. To have that kind of preparation going into this game will help.”

That win in Iowa City gave Cignetti’s squad valuable perspective — learning what it takes to stay poised and execute on the road. Now, with the stakes even higher, he’s focused on keeping his players calm, confident, and true to their identity.

“I just want Fernando, like the rest of the guys on the team, to relax and play their game,” Cignetti said. “We’re just going to go out there and play our game and play it well.”

For Cignetti and the Hoosiers, the message is simple — focus on what’s directly in front of them. As the coach often says, the most important game is always the next one.

Saturday’s matchup won’t be short on stakes. After Washington and Georgia’s losses in Week 5, Oregon now owns the nation’s longest active home winning streak at 18 games. Indiana will have a golden opportunity to snap that run and make a statement on the national stage.

The showdown kicks off Saturday, Oct. 11, at 3:30 p.m. (EST) in Eugene — a battle between two Top 10 programs with everything to prove. Expect fireworks, intensity, and plenty of storylines to follow. Stay tuned to Hoosier Huddle for full coverage and postgame reactions from what promises to be a thrilling clash in Autzen Stadium.
