Let’s take a look at some of the quotes that Indiana State’s head coach Curt Mallory had to say that referenced Indiana specifically in his Monday press conference.
It’s a custom of the college football season for head coaches across the nation to meet with the media towards the beginning of the week and discuss the prior week’s matchup and preview their upcoming test. Fans are often privy to the quotes coming out of their own team’s HQ, but what about their upcoming opponents’?
Q: With a strong offense on the other sideline, how do you plan on slowing them down?
“Well, you know they’re going to have their plays, there’s no doubt about it. They’re a very explosive football team. They’ve got a lot of weapons at running back, wide receiver, quarterback is phenomenal. They’re physical up front. I don’t know if anyone is going to slow them down, but we’ve got to be able to not let them have the home runs. They’re big play explosive. Do a great job in all three phases of the game. Watching them on film, they’re very good on special teams, they’re very good on offense, and they’re very good on defense.”
Q: What do you take from last year’s FBS matchup against Purdue into this week?
“Well, it’s great experience and a great environment in front of the sold out crowd at Purdue. I’m sure it’ll be a sellout this week here down in Bloomington. Just the experience, I think guys are excited. We’ve got a good contingency of guys from the state of Indiana, so I think being able to play the Purdue’s and Indiana’s means a lot. And it doesn’t mean you have to be from Indiana, you can be from wherever, but to play against a ranked FBS opponent, what a great opportunity.”
Q: On how special it is to play Indiana for Mallory specifically (he is the youngest son of former IU coach Bill Mallory)…
“Yeah, sure. Obviously, I’ve got a history there. I’m from Bloomington. I coached there, my father obviously coached there for 13 seasons. But you know, it’s not about that, it really isn’t. It’s about the Sycamores, it’s about Indiana State playing Indiana. It’ll be great to see a lot of familiar faces, that’s always nice to see.
I know they’re going to honor my dad’s teams in the 1990s, so I’ll see a lot of former players. A lot of former players that I know and that are my age. But at the end of the day, it’s about two teams playing, and I’ll have family back because of that. My sisters and brothers will all be there so it will be great to see them as well.”
