With the departures of CJ West, James Carpenter, and Lanell Carr Jr., Indiana was left searching for reinforcements along the defensive line. The Hoosiers turned to the transfer portal and landed an experienced addition in Western Kentucky defensive tackle Hosea Wheeler.
A redshirt senior from California, Wheeler’s football journey has been built on perseverance and relentless work ethic. Starting his career at a junior college in Sacramento, he embraced each day with the mindset of getting better. That same determination—and a growing reputation as a leader—eventually carried him to Bloomington, where he’s now tasked with anchoring Indiana’s defensive front in the Big Ten.
Since arriving in the spring, Wheeler has had to make quick adjustments to Indiana’s defensive philosophy. At Western Kentucky, he was used to playing in a lateral system. With the Hoosiers, the scheme is far more aggressive and vertical, requiring linemen to attack gaps and disrupt plays at the line of scrimmage.

“The biggest challenge for me was really at my old school, we played a lateral defense, and this defense is really vertical and attacking everybody,” Wheeler explained after Thursday’s practice. “That was really the biggest struggle for me. And, doing it at multiple positions, because I am playing different positions, so getting adjusted to that.”
Despite the learning curve, Wheeler credits Indiana defensive line coach Pat Kuntz for accelerating his growth. “But, Coach Kuntz, he is the best defensive line coach in America. He got me going really quick. He has really brought me along really fast, and it has helped me so much. With him and the other guys pushing me along, seeing Tyrique Tucker and how be plays vertical and Dominique Ratcliff – he came from a vertical defense – seeing them and adjusting to them just helped me a lot too.”
Adjusting to Indiana’s system hasn’t been without its challenges, but Wheeler has embraced every step of the process. For a player who once hoped just to land an FCS offer after junior college, the opportunity to now line up in the Big Ten is a testament to how far his determination has carried him. The transition wasn’t seamless at first, but Wheeler says the game is beginning to slow down, and his confidence is growing with each rep.
“Usually, we’d step side-to-side, going against these big offensive linemen, but now we get to go attack and actually be physical with them,” Wheeler explained. “That was the biggest challenge, but I think I am getting the hang of it, and I am really enjoying myself here.”
At 300 pounds, Wheeler has the size and strength to hold his own against anyone, but it’s his mindset that sets him apart. He’s quickly buying into defensive coordinator Bryant Haines’ scheme, which thrives on physicality and relentless pressure. And while Wheeler showed flashes of dominance against Power Four programs during his time at Western Kentucky, he knows this season is about proving he can deliver at that level every single week.
“I just need to bring my A game every week, be a leader every week,” Wheeler said. “I went against really good opponents, you know, Alabama, Ohio State. It’s just about being consistent. I can’t just have flashy games in the big games, and them when its a regular game I just can’t be mediocre. I just have to continue to be consistent and have those games throughout the whole entire season to help us win.”
Wheeler has already proven he can rise to the moment, delivering game-changing plays like his strip-sack against Alabama in 2024 and his strip-sack-and-interception performance versus Ohio State in 2023. But for Wheeler, those highlights aren’t enough—his focus is on becoming the type of player who brings that same impact every Saturday, no matter the opponent. After all the work it’s taken to reach this level—navigating Juco ball, climbing into the FBS ranks, and now adjusting to multiple positions in a brand-new defensive scheme—his drive remains the same: stay hungry, stay consistent, and never settle.
With the season just a week away, anticipation is at a fever pitch in Bloomington. Hosea Wheeler’s journey is only one piece of the puzzle, but his determination embodies the grit this Hoosier team is determined to play with.
