True freshmen defensive backs are typically not ready to contribute in year one, particularly in the Big Ten for a school with hopes of challenging for the College Football Playoff. Add in a fantastic group of safeties and corners and it becomes incredibly tough for a freshman to crack the rotation. That written, the 6’2” Seonta Stewart has the talent to at least make the coaching staff think about how to handle Stewart’s playing time.
Seaonta Stewart chose IU over offers from Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and West Virginia because he wanted the chance to play for Curt Cignetti and position coaches Rod Ojong and Ola Adams. He helped Winton Woods win a state title as a freshman in high school and was a three-star prospect by ESPN, Rivals, On3 and 247Sports. Stewart is capable of playing safety or corner and he was noted as being “extremely long with a really good frame and size” by Hoosier Huddle when we observed practice in early August. His best position is unclear but the length and height would tend to make one think about his potential as a cornerback against bigger wide receivers.
The depth of the corner and safety positions is one of the strengths of this IU roster so the Hoosiers are very likely going to be able to redshirt Seaonta Stewart and develop him for a year before starting to rely him in 2026.
