The 2025 Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff keeps charging ahead, and with just three weeks until Indiana squares off against Old Dominion, the buzz in Bloomington is reaching a fever pitch. As part of our 100-day tradition of spotlighting every player on the roster, today we shift the focus to a name flying just under the radar. Defensive back Dontrae Henderson may not be in the headlines yet, but he’s a hungry young talent in the Hoosiers’ secondary—coming into fall camp ready to make his mark and prove he belongs.
Hailing from Julius L. Chambers High School in Charlotte, Dontrae Henderson was a Swiss Army knife in the secondary—thriving at both safety and cornerback. His résumé speaks for itself: All-State honors, 65 tackles, five interceptions, 32 pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble in a single season. A three-star prospect (per ESPN and On3), Henderson joined the Cig Train on December 17, 2023, when he flipped his commitment from James Madison to join Curt Cignetti in Bloomington.
And if you’re wondering where that defensive fire comes from, just check the family tree. His brother, Jacobie Henderson, is a starting defensive back for Rutgers after earning All-Conference honors at Marshall in 2024. Another brother, Deontae Henderson, locked down receivers at Campbell from 2015–2018. Oh, and his cousin? None other than Jaire Alexander, a two-time NFL All-Pro (2020, 2022) now patrolling the secondary for the Baltimore Ravens. Around the Henderson household, defense isn’t just a position—it’s a birthright.
As a freshman, Dontrae Henderson got his first taste of college action in a matchup against Western Illinois. In high school, he was the definition of a complete defensive back—forcing turnovers, blanketing receivers, and laying down solid tackles. Those sharp instincts and natural ball skills are exactly why he’s expected to be a valuable depth piece in Indiana’s secondary this fall. And if he taps into even a slice of the talent that runs through his family’s veins, Henderson has the makings of a future difference-maker in Bloomington. This season will be the first chapter in seeing just how high his ceiling can climb.
