Continuing on with our annual Countdown to Kickoff, we move forward to day 25, where we highlight one of Indiana’s breakout stars in recent years: starting safety Amare Ferrell.

Amare Ferrell is one of the major bright spots and developmental success stories of the past several years for the Hoosiers program. He arrived in Bloomington as a high level 3 star recruit, ranking top 600 in his class per 247 Sports Composite Rankings. He received some strong offers from schools like Arizona, Cincinnati, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Penn State, Pitt, South Carolina, and Tennessee – just to name a few. However, Tom Allen (the Indiana head coach at the time of his recruitment) always had strong ties to the state of Florida, which was likely one of the turning points for getting Ferrell to Bloomington.

Since arriving on campus, Ferrell has blossomed into a starter, leader, and all around elite Power 4 defender that any school would be lucky to have. Per iuhoosiers.com, Ferrell graded as the 8th best safety in the Big Ten during the 2024 season. This breakout year in 2024 comes directly after his true freshman campaign in 2023 where he played all 12 games and regularly was the spark that the defense needed to keep going.

Entering 2025, Ferrell is the 6th highest graded returning safety in the Big Ten, behind the likes of Caleb Downs, for example. Ferrell has a unique opportunity this season to be one of the best defensive players in the conference and in the country as a whole. He brings skill, athleticism, and football IQ that other defenders in the country simply do not have and may never have in their careers. Amare Ferrell truly has the ceiling to be a top 25 defender in the country, a top 3 round NFL draft pick, and an NFL regular starter who plays for a long time.

This season could be a very special one for #25. Be on the lookout for him because if you blink, you just might miss him flying in the backfield for a sack or charging at a defender for a pass breakup.
