The 2025 Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff is rolling right along, and with just four weeks to go until Indiana takes the field against Old Dominion, the excitement in Bloomington is building fast. As part of our annual 100-day tradition of highlighting every player on the roster, today we turn our attention to a name that might not be in the spotlight yet. Defensive back Reece Bellin is a key depth piece in the secondary, and he’s entering the fall with something to prove.
Bellin’s journey to the defensive backfield didn’t follow the usual script. A standout wide receiver at Carmel High School, the Indiana native earned Indiana Football Coaches Association All-State honors as a senior thanks to his reliable hands and sharp route running. Despite the accolades, Bellin went unrated as a recruit and flew under the radar in the 2023 cycle. He joined the Hoosiers as a walk-on during fall camp, making the switch to safety shortly after arriving in Bloomington. While he didn’t see the field in 2023, Bellin decided to redshirt his first collegiate season in order to develop and grasp his position on defense.

Bellin’s second year in Bloomington came and went without game action in 2024, but that doesn’t mean his story’s written just yet. Now a redshirt sophomore, he enters fall camp buried behind a loaded group of veteran safeties. With proven leaders like Amare Ferrell, Devan Boykin, and Louis Moore expected to lock down the top spots — and experienced contributors like Bryson Bonds plus several rising underclassmen in the mix — competition in the defensive backfield is fierce. While Bellin’s path to playing time won’t be easy, he could emerge as a reliable depth piece if injuries strike or rotations shift. His development this fall will be key to determining whether he can seize that next-man-up role.
The most realistic path for Reece Bellin in 2025 is to continue soaking up knowledge from the veteran leaders in the safety room while sharpening his game behind the scenes. Special teams could be his ticket onto the field this fall, especially if he brings the same work ethic that got him to Bloomington in the first place. For now, Bellin remains a grinder — showing up, putting in the reps, and waiting for his moment to shine when opportunity strikes.
