4-Star QB Jameson Purcell: ‘IU Checked All the Boxes For Me’

Jameson Purcell attends an Indiana Football game in 2024 Credit: X Subscriber Content The Indiana Hoosiers added their first and possibly most important piece to the 2027 high school recruiting class in four-star quarterback Jameson Purcell. The Illinois prospect decided on the Hoosiers earlier this week and talked to Hoosier Huddle about his recruitment. "IU really just checks all the boxes for me! They offer a great education and business school, the opportunity to see the field." Purcell said. Some of those boxes included the staff's culture and history of developing quarterbacks as well as a convenient location. "I love how they develop QB’s and Coach Cignetti’s culture, as well as the fact that it’s still close enough to home that my family and friends can come to games." Purcell explained. It's a Family Matter Jameson Purcell and his family. Credit: X The Purcell family has deep roots in Bloomington and may have as many IU degrees as Jameson has touchdowns. "My parents both went there and met there back in the 90’s, I have one cousin who will be a senior there now, one cousin that graduated two years ago from there, an uncle and two aunts that all attended IU." Purcell said. "It’s exciting to be following in their footsteps but no one has put pressure on me at all to make the decision. IU just felt right every time I went to campus and with all the interactions I had with their staff. There wasn’t one person that I talked to along the journey (friends, family, current players, staff, alumni) that didn’t absolutely love their experience at IU." Checking Boxes with the Staff On the field Purcell has felt the connection with the staff from the get go. "I have spent quite a bit of time with the staff there between visits to campus, attending games, their visits to my high school, and lots of phone conversations. I feel that Coach Whitmer and I have really connected on a personal level, and he’s shared a lot of his football and coaching experiences with me." Purcell said. "I love how Coach Cignetti interacts with his players on and off the field, he’s very positive and calm, and a man of few words so when he speaks, he means what he says, he’s straightforward. IU’s staff really made me feel like I was wanted there and they put a lot of time and energy into making me feel valued as a future student athlete but without any pressure." The Fit at IU There is still a lot of time between now and when Purcell puts on the Hoosier uniform for real. However, he can already see how he can fit into the offensive system. "I feel like their pro- style and and spread offense is what I am used to and good at, and will fit into their program well. Obviously my own training and regular season continue but I look forward to IU giving me feedback on what they see for me as far as continuing to develop." Purcell said. Self Evaluation The thing that stands out the most about Purcell is that he is a lefty. He doesn't shy away from it, and instead lists it as the first way to describe him as a player. Being a lefty doesn't automatically make you an All-American, Purcell has other attributes that make him one of the best quarterbacks in the country. "I am a lefty first and foremost but I think I would be best described as a hard worker and quick learner. My strengths are my footwork, accuracy, consistency and quick release. I am always doing film study and board work to improve my reads and I think of myself as more of a quiet leader. I try to lead by my actions not necessarily by my words and I have been told I am very calm under pressure." He said. What's Next Purcell still has two high school seasons left before arriving in Bloomington. So what's next in his development and journey? "This season ahead I am excited to work hard to take my team all the way to state. Our program is a big, strong one in 8A but it’s been a few year since they’ve held the title. I would love nothing more than to win at state and do it with the guys I have literally grown up with and have been playing sports with my whole life." He explained. Purcell continued by saying, "As far as next steps, I will focus on my junior season, and my grades and I will continue to train as I do now. I will for sure be going to at least two IU games so far this fall and will continue talking with staff on a weekly basis. Next spring and summer then I will get to spend bigger chunks of time on campus attending their camps and hopefully hyping up the 27 class!
