Continuing on with our annual Countdown to Kickoff, we move forward to day 39, where we highlight linebacker Carter Imes.
Carter Imes committed to the Hoosiers in April of 2024. Per iuhoosiers.com, he joined the program as a walk-on and redshirted his freshman season. Entering 2025, his redshirt freshman season, Imes will be looking to build upon a wildly successful 2024 season that set new heights for the Hoosiers program.
Carter Imes is more personally invested in the Hoosiers than most, as his father also played for Indiana. His father, Andy Imes, was part of Bill Mallory’s team in 1987 and suffered an unfortunate injury, but then joined Mallory’s staff. Carter Imes suffered a similarly challenging setback during his junior year of high school as he was diagnosed with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. During that tough junior season in high school, coaches raved about how Imes would run practice drills, be the hardest worker in the weight room, and that they “…saw a future coach…” when watching Imes around the team (Credit Kyle Neddenriep at the Indy Star for this wonderful story and all of its great quotes and insights).
Imes was told that it would be extremely unlikely to ever play football again, but defying the odds, Carter Imes was able to put together a stellar high school senior season on the field and also put in valuable work as a freshman in Bloomington this past season.
Unfortunately, Imes recently posted on Instagram that due to continued maintenance following his health challenges earlier in life, he will have to step away from football. It is unclear how close Imes will remain with the team, but one thing is for sure, the Hoosiers got a good one in Carter Imes.
