The new revenue sharing agreement makes it very possible that walk-ons within collegiate football are quite possibly going to become a thing of the past. For now, walk-ons continue and they are a unique breed that perhaps call out to a bygone era. One anonymous walk-on was quoted as saying, “you don’t even do it because you love football. You walk-on because you can’t live without football.”

The feeling of playing a sport not because of what financial reward is to be gained and not because of the attention and fame that could be garnered but because of a burning desire and need to compete and test yourself against others is something many of us can relate. Of course, most of us are not blessed with a 6’6” body and a maniacal work ethic that allows us to play football in the Big Ten. Aden Cannon is a walk-on defensive lineman from Carmel, Indiana and he is entering his fourth season with the IU program.

Cannon starred in both football and basketball for Guerin Catholic High School and joined Tom Allen’s program prior to the 2022 season. He has yet to see any game action but he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in each of the past two seasons. Cannon’s work in the classroom earned him a spot in a summer internship program through IU’s Excellence Academy. The program included nine other student athletes and allowed for a paid internship with a flexible schedule.

Aden Cannon is now a veteran in the program and he’s a member of a very deep and talented defensive line room. He’s unlikely to see any extended game action but he could work his way onto the field for snaps early in the season against Indiana State or Kennesaw State as IU tries to stay healthy for the Big Ten schedule.
