Sudfeld, Hoosiers Excited to Be Back on the Field For Spring Practice

A new season is here, enough of the talk about who might do what, it is time to put on the pads and buckle up the chinstrap. The Indiana Hoosiers finally hit the field again in Mellencamp Pavilion as they partook in their first of 15 practices this spring. The hope and optimism was palpable as the Hoosiers got back a healthy Nate Sudfeld, which has been the big question looming over IU since October. On Thursday, Sudfeld did not don the yellow non-contact jersey and was a full go in team drills and looked sharp in a practiced that head coach Kevin Wilson called “pretty good”.

After practice Sudfeld could not hold back his giddiness about being back on the field playing saying he had that feeling of “alright we are back” when participating in full team drills. He added that he did not feel all that rusty due to his participation in 7-on-7 drills this off-season. Those winter workouts have given the quarterback a better feel for his still young receivers saying that, “we worked extremely hard this winter getting on the same page and understanding each other, so I know where they are going to be and they know where I am going to put the ball. It is still a work in progress, but they have all been willing to do the work and put in the extra time so I am excited to see us keep building and carry that momentum into the fall.” A healthy Sudfeld is the key for this Hoosier offense getting back to where it was in 2013. His time away from the field has led him to focus on his leadership abilities and given his a chance to improve upon his scouting skills and the mental part of his game.

  • A few other notes from the first day of spring practice:
  • Receivers Coray Keel and UAB transfer Marqui Hawkins will miss the spring with injuries.
  • Sophomore Chris Covington will be back at linebacker
  • Senior Nick Mangieri and RS Freshman Robert McCray III have switched from the Bandit to defensive line
  • RS Freshamn Zeke Walker has switched from linebacker to safety.
