On Monday night the Hoosiers’ Tevin Coleman was honored as one of two running backs named first team All-Big Ten. Coleman, who became the 18th rusher in FBS history to reach the 2,000-yard mark in the season finale Saturday, joins Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon as the top running back in the conference.
Coleman, a junior, had the best season ever by an Indiana University running back. He set the school record for rushing yards in a single season with 2,036 on 270 carries. That is a mind blowing 7.5 yards per carry. Coleman also scored 15 touchdowns. What may be even more impressive is that he put up these numbers while the Hoosiers did not have much of a passing game after the sixth game of the season. For his career Coleman has 3,219 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns. Coleman is also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award given to the nation’s top running back.
Several other Hoosiers garnered conference awards as senior safety Mark Murphy was named the Big Ten’s Sportsmanship award winner while safety Antonio Allen, offensive linemen Dan Feeney, Colin Rahrig, and Jason Spriggs, as well as wide receiver Shane Wynn and defensive lineman Bobby Richardson all received Big Ten Honorable Mentions.
