Spring Game Defensive Recap

Spring Game Defensive Recap

Written By Nathan Comp (@NathanComp1)

After much anticipation all spring leading up to today, the Indiana football team concluded its spring practices with their annual spring game. Unfortunately, looming threatening weather kept the game from being played outside and was instead played in Mellencamp Pavilion’s indoor practice facility. The game was closed to the general public and instead allowed only a small crowd of the player’s families and media. The standard spring game format was utilized in the first half of play, as the Cream and Crimson squads (drafted earlier this week) faced off and the special teams units were given an opportunity to put points on the board at the conclusion of quarters. A final score was declared, with Team Crimson defeating Team Cream 37-28, at the end of the first half. The second half utilized a running clock and teams were split into offense and defense.

Austin Dorris Readying for the Spotlight

Austin Dorris Readying for the Spotlight

After a redshirt year and two years serving as a depth guy, Austin Dorris is now one of just two upperclassmen at tight end, joining Ryan Watercutter at the position. After Mike DeBord was hired, he emphasized getting the tight ends more involved in Indiana’s passing game, and it was met with mixed results. Probable NFL Draft selection Ian Thomas was a solid asset in the passing game last year catching 25 balls for 376 yards and 5 touchdowns, but no other tight end caught a ball last year besides Watercutter, who tallied 12 of them for a total of 69 yards. Tight end has been an overlooked position at Indiana for a while now, as no guy has gone over 400 yards in a year since Ted Bolser in 2012.

The last day of March brought some sunshine and the first outdoor practice in a long while for the Hoosiers on Saturday morning. There seemed to be an added level of intensity everyone brought with finally getting the chance to be outside of the Mellencamp Pavilion. Head coach Tom Allen made his excitement clear after practice. Saturday was the first bigger scrimmage the Hoosiers have had and Coach Allen was pleased with what he saw on both sides of the ball.

Craig Nelson is Sprinting Under The Radar at Running Back

The 2017 season was a frustrating one for IU football fans as the Hoosiers looked great at times but ultimately failed to reach a bowl game. One of the primary reasons for the 5-7 record was a lackluster running game that was forced to rely on inexperienced freshmen and an offensive line that was below IU’s recent standards. Heading into 2018, Indiana fans understandably expect much more from the rushing attack.
